How to make family understand.

My TSH was 141 and the doctor told me to rest and take it easy until I got better.  It would be rechecked in six weeks.  Since then they have asked me to babysit, have accused me of being lazy because I don't want to go to their children's ballgames, and even gotten mad at me because I was hot.  I tried to make them understand how bad that high of a level can make a person feel but they just don't get it.

Hi sandy unfortunately people who do not suffer this disorder never seem to understand the serverity of it I would suggest first finding a specialist whom can explain your disorder fully to you and then envite your family to just one doctor visit and have the doctor explain to them the serverity of it. I have a autoimmune thyroid disorder and had a tsh level that was over 500 when it was discovered and let me tell you I felt like I was losing my mind. I had no memory of where things were at the local walmart store and felt like I was in a terrible drunkin dream for months all the while my family thought I was being dramatic and just thought I was depressed or exhausted!! Very frustrating and unpromising to say the least but I found a specialist who was able to get me on a medication called cytomel and since then I am fully awake again and actually got pregnant with our second child!!! 7months pregnant and counting and no autism on the test results!!! Stay positive and continue to listen to your own body, not everyone will understand but the more you understand the less thier lack of understanding will effect you and or your relationships! Good Luck and Hope all is well!!!

Hopefully the medication will help. Now I know sometimes it takes a bit of tweaking the dosage, so you may be for a roller coaster ride with symptoms, but hopefully your thyroid will level out.

Just hang in there & take care of yourself & do only what you can, NOT what others want you too do....

I just finally got my labs. I had to take matters into my own hands and go back to the E.R and hound to make sure the tests got to the office. I was prescribed 100 synthroid based on t4 and tsh only. I feel really bad and the burning is still there. I got a wonderful tip on a doctor in my local area from grimel and will see him when I can get more money set aside. In the meantime I am on the synthroid which may or may not help. Anything to get that number down as I have been that high for over 2 months now. I got the t4 (that may be the ft4 number not sure) number which was 6 and the tsh was 18.9.

Thanks for the answers.  This whole summer I've felt like I was going nuts, feeling so exhausted and trying to keep up with my family's demands.  I have basically stopped answering the phone!  I have one daughter at home and I have enough on my hands to care for her.  It gets so hot here, 107 degrees yesterday, and when I go outside I get really sick.  I live in Muskogee and used to have a great doctor, but he moved, so I'm on my second doctor now trying to find one who takes my condition seriously.  It's good to know that other people understand how I feel.  I don't feel so crazy now!

Are you on ANY medication? That is high....you are most likely feeling all the hypo symptoms & being tired is one of them...

As far as your family goes they are being selfish....You take care of your health. If they don't understand then they are the ones with issues, NOT you....

Just tell them you are having medical issues and leave it at that....don't try to make them understand, they don't want to because you are not helping them & that is all they see....

You can tell them you are having thyroid issues and no further explaination unless they ask for it or you can guide them to the internet to look it up....

I get a burning on mostly my arms and feel hot or sunburned. Then there are times I feel cold and hot. And I get real numb. I agree post a copy of the symptoms and get a diff doctor. i went to the er 2 weeks ago and can't even get the labs to the office. I don't know who to find to help me either. My doc wants to treat based only off t4....

You could make a copy of this list of typical hypo symptoms and show it to them and tell them that these symptoms can occur with a TSH that is only single digit.  Yours is triple digit.  That is very high.  Symptoms will be much more severe with a TSH at that level.

And speaking of that, from your doctor's reaction to your test result and your next appointment being 6 weeks later, I suspect that you need to find a good thyroid doctor right now.  You shouldn't be waiting around for all that time to get the additional testing that you need.  Since Hashimoto's Thyroiditis is the most common cause of hypothyroidism, you need to be tested for the thyroid antibodies, TPO ab and TG ab.  Also, you need to be tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, which are Free T3 and Free T4.  Note that these are not the same as Total T3 and T4.  There are additional tests that should be done, but we can discuss those later.  These are the highest priority.

If you will tell us where you are located, perhaps a member can recommend a good thyroid doctor for you.
