Having some bad side effects from meds

I have Postpartum Thyroiditis, been suffering for about 3 months, I am hyperthyroid.  I have been taking beta blockers for about 3 weeks now, not a big fan.  Last week doctor put me on Tapazole, 5mg twice a day.  For the past few days I have been EXTREMELY sleepy.  I mean if I sit down I will fall asleep.  I don't like the way that feels.  I have a 7 month old who I have to care for and I can't do it in a coma.  I take 25mg of Toprol a day.  Is it possible that the anti thyroid is already working or that my thyroid could be going back the other way?  Is this from the beta blocker?  I asked the doc when he gave me the prescription for the Tapazole if I could stop taking the beta blocker and he said no.  Can I taper it?  I don't go back to the doc until 3 more weeks.

It is possible that you have gone a little Hypo, although without blood work, there is no way to tell, Fatigue is a symtom of Hypo, but we cannot advise on dosage that your MD has prescribed, at this point you should contact your md again and insist you do not feel right and request a retest, or as an alternative go to an independant lab. You should request Free T3 and Free T4 along with the TSH, The Free T3 and T4's are actual thyroid hormones, TSH is a pituitary hormone. Good Luck FTB4

Just got done with my new Endocrinologist and she said after looking at my previous labs, "Let's send you for an uptake scan to know exactly what is going on with you."  I was so happy to hear that!  I have to wait 2 weeks, but at least finally now we are moving in the right direction.

Well I hope you don't have to go through anymore, that sounds like enough to me, I think you will be fine once you get stable with the medications, learn all you can about your condition, the more you know, the less stress you will have, and with thyroid you do not need anymore stress or anxiety. Ask questions here about anything you need to know, and you can also test out how receptive your MD is by asking him the same questions.
Don't let the symptoms get the best of you, it will all work out for the best. Take Care

I have had blood tests, T3 T4 TSH Antibodies, Sedmentation Rate, TSH Receptor Antibody, Ultrasound that showed enlarged thyroid, nothing else....That is it.....

I dont think any requests by a patient would be out of the question, and if he refused your request, he should have a valid reason why he declined to do that particular test. There are several tests related to thyroid, The first ones my endo did was the Free's, The TSH and the Thyroid UltraSound, I do not know which tests you have had completed up to now and not being an MD I would not be in a position to say. But there is no reason at all for an MD not to respond to any questions you have about your condition or tests you require. I hope you have a better relationship with your new MD, with thyroid that is a big part of the battle. Best Regards FTB4

Don't worry, I am going to a new one because the other one looked at me like I was stupid when I would ask him questions.  I felt like he blew me off.  I am really hoping this new one I will feel comfortable with.  Would be out of the question for me to ask for an uptake scan?

I would just follow the course with your new Endo, and don't be leery about asking questions, if he seems offish about your questions, just explain to him that you would feel more comfortable  knowing what was going on with your body, rather than going home and stressing about it. And insist on the Free T3 and T4 results/Ref Ranges, this way you can post them here and get more info about your condition. Good Luck FTB4

I am not sure if the T4 supressant would work that fast or not, but I did contact another member (Gimel) to see if he would be able to tell you if they do act that quick. Good Luck FTB4

Got my Free T4 back it went from 2.9 (0.08-1.8) on March 21 to 1.8 (0.08-1.8) on April 5.  Does anti thyroid med work that fast?

You should also request the Free T3, if not by your primary, then by the new Endo.

Thanks FTB4, went to my primary doc and he took me off the anti thyroid.  Told me that the Endo should have done an uptake scan to see what exactly is causing the hyperthyroid.  He is sending me to a new Endo, but can't get in for 3 weeks.  He told me to keep taking the beta blocker and I am going to do that.  He also took blood for a Free T4 test, just to see if it has gone done since my last blood work about 3 weeks ago.  I pray it has.

Beta -blocker are supposed to lower blood pressure, that is why your BP is at a good level, I would not be scared to take it, unless your blood pressure is always that low, but you indicated it is highre than that before. It is not good to abruptly stop taking a medication for blood pressure as this could cause BP spikes. 109/70 is a good level, I wish mine stayed that low and not 127/75 and I am taking Diovan, The thyroid condition causes dizzyness and fatigue and not the blood pressure med, it reduces your bp by relaxing the blood vessels so the heart does not have to pump as hard thereby reducing the BP. The thyroid hormones affect the matabolism, and in turn affects your energy levels and fatigue.  Good Luck FTB4

I called my Doc and the nurse told me that my drowsiness and fatigue are not caused by my meds.  She also told me I should refer to my primary doctor for my symptoms.  I think my blood pressure is low.  I just checked it and its 109 over 70, its usually a bit higher than that.  I guess I will call my primary doc tomorrow.  And I think I will find a new Endo.  I haven't even taken my beta blocker today, and now I'm scared to take it.
