Tirosint

Hello All,

For those of you who have made the switch from Synthroid/Cytomel combo to Tirosint:

I was on originally on 50mcg of Synthroid (not feeling well at all) so added 5mcg Cytomel (feel better with a little T3) but not great (think it is the binders/filler in Synthroid). Just started on 50mcg of Tirosint (on it for 4 days) and am having insomnia. I haven't even added my 5mcg of Cytomel yet for fear of worse insomnia/hyper symptoms.

Should we have started me at 25mcg of Tirosint?

Did you keep the dosage the same?

Did you add Cytomel as well?

Thanks.

2 days isn't long enough to tell what's going to happen, since it takes a dosage change 4-6 weeks to take full effect.

It's not unusual for symptoms to change/worsen for a short time, when starting a new med.  There's a good chance that 25 mcg won't be enough, but you need to not change doses again, until this has time to stabilize.

Do you check your blood pressure at all, at home?  Light-headedness and dizziness are symptoms of low blood pressure.  The anxiousness, is most likely anxiety (the other symptoms could be, as well, but I'd want to rule out low blood pressure).

Hello,

Since my last post, I switched down to 25 mcg of Tirosint thinking that starting at 50mcg was too much. I am now on my 2nd day and I feel odd: light-headed, anxious, dizzy.
Is it the switch to the low dose? Is it not enough? Should I add T3?
HELP.
Thanks.

I actually started Tirosint at a higher dose than my levothyroxine dose had been.  I continued to take my T3 med, as usual.  After a few months, I did have to back off on the Tirosint.

We've had some members who had to back off on Tirosint dosage, because the gelcaps are fully dissolved and "supposedly" absorbed better.

Insomnia can be a sign of hypo, as well.

The people that I know who have switched to Tirosint have pretty much gone straight across in dose, keeping it the same.  Tirosint is supposedly more absorbable, so theoretically, you might have to take less.  As with everything thyroid, I assume it's open to individual differences.

If your symptoms keep up, you might ask your doctor about trying a smaller dose for a while.  Is insomnia your only symptom?  Anything else that could be causing that?  Four days is a pretty short time to start getting hyper on a dose change.

Tirosint is T4-only, so it won't replace your Cytomel.  If I were you though, I'd probably hold off on that until you get more used to the Tirosint.

Do you have labs and reference ranges to post?
