I have been feeling extremely tired for the last 6 months. Finally I realized it wasnt normal.I have been having weight gain, very sluggish, puffy eyes and face, and also hair loss. I went to the doctor and she tested my TSH and T4. I have an appointment with an Endocrinologist on Friday. After research it seems like I have Hyperthyroidism?…even though I have symptoms of Hypothyroidism. I don’t understand how this can be. I don’t want to be treated for Hyper and gain more weight. I am currently 195lbs and am 5’2” tall. Please see my results below. Anyone else in the same boat?
TSH 0.346 L uIU/mL Reference 0.450- 4.500
T4 Free(Direct) 1.39 ng/dL Reference 0.82-1.77
Another thought is that your low TSH and hypo symptoms may signal the need for pituitary function testing.
Be aware that not all Endos are good thyroid doctors. Many specialize in diabetes. Many have the "Immaculate TSH Belief" and don't want to pay any attention to other, more important tests. I suggest that you ask the doctor if he is going to be willing to treat you clinically (for symptoms), by testing and adjusting FT3 and FT4, with meds as necessary to relieve symptoms, without being constrained by resultant TSH levels. You should also ask if the doctor is willing to prescribe meds other than T4 types. If the answer to either is no, then you will probably have to keep looking for a good thyroid doctor that will treat you clinically.
