Hypothyroid and Yaz Birth control

Three years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimotos Disease/ hypothyroid. I have a great doctor who has been with me for 10 pounds of weight gain (i gained 10 pounds before I was diagnosed) and back down 20 pounds to a comfortable weight. My meds (synthroid .75 and .88 alternating) was working well and I was feeling great. In march I started taking Yasmin birth control pills and started noticing a pound or two of weight gain so I worked with my doctors to change my perscription to yaz, however I continue to gain weight. In total I have gained 14 pounds. My endocronologist is now leaning toward my birth control as the culprit. Can you please weigh in on your experiance and is there a different birth control pill I could take having hypothyroidism? thanks

yes kitty9309, you are correct!  thyroid hormones circulate in your blood in two forms, bound and free.  the free levels of thyroid hormone are active and the bound forms are inactive.  estrogen increases the amount of thyroid hormones that are bound, leaving you with less free active thyroid hormone.  a normal individual is able to compensate for this by increasing their thyroid hormone levels.  however, since your body is not able to make its own thyroid hormone, your levels of active thyroid hormone are lower.  this may be why you are gaining weight, which is a symptom of HYPOthyroidism.

I have read that the Estrogen in bc (as well as estrogen therapy) can change your thyroid hormone requirements. Try doing an internet search.

Go to the Medical and Health list of Doctor-to-Patient or  Patient to Patient Forums at: http://www.medhelp.org/forums.htm and chose a forum that fits your condition and/or needs.

If you have posted more than one post per the sites rules for doctors forums, you probably won't get answered.  Or if the forum is full and not taking any more questions for the day, you can try another day.

Good luck and Best of health!
