I totally agree that you need to get your thyroid checked before resorting to surgery. If you have no insurance, most States or Counties have a Public Health Clinic that you can go to, to get tested.
At the very minimum, you need TSH, Free T3 and Free T4. You should also have the antibody tests (I'd also add TSI to rule out Graves Disease, which is usually related to hyperthyroidism); but many doctors won't do antibody testing unless the thyroid levels are off. However, that's the only way to confirm or rule out whether or not you have an autoimmune disease, in which antibodies attack your thyroid and will eventually destroy it.
Many of us feel achey and sore all over when our thyroid levels are off.
Back surgery is a crap shoot. It should be your last resort. How old are you?
I believe a lot of achey feeling are actually due to hypothyroid...Your body is attacking itself....Get to a doctor and request TSH, Free T3, Free t4, and the TgAB, TPOab (thyroid antibodies). Start there and then report back to this forum. The poeple on this forum are awesome and have lots of great information.
Have you discussed these symptoms with a doctor. If you are having back surgery and could possibly have a thyroid disorder that could be very dangerous. I had back surgery and my doctor had to make sure my thyroid was ok before he would operate. Have you already had pre op blood tests for the surgery? Not to question you but if you have no insurance how are you getting the back surgery done? Good luck.
