In the process of being diagnosed

Hi,

I recently had comprehensive blood tests done as part of a regular checkup after many years in which I had not gone to the GP (36 yrs old woman). The tests came back showing a low TSH 0.1 (scale 0.35-5.5), and normal Total T-3 2.3 (1.29-3.1) as well as normal Free T-4 15.5 (10.3-20.0). The GP decided to redo the tests and this time my results were as follows:

TSH: 0.07 (0.35-5.5)
Total T-3: 2.1 (1.29-3.1)
Free T-4: 12.9 (10.3-20.0)

She also sent me to have an ultrasound (please excuse the unprofessional translation from the Hebrew, I am from Israel):
right - regular size, with one central focus of 0.4 cm otherwise uniform texture
left - regular size, no focus, non uniform texture
istmus - regular size, no focus, slightly non-uniform
Right Lymph Node under jaw enlarged 1.1/0.5 cm, kept structure

Finally the GP tested for antibodies which came back:

Thyroglobulin Ab 53 (0.01-100)
Anti Thyroid Peroxide 189 (0.01-50)

The GP was unsure of the diagnosis and initially wanted to send me to do a thyroid scan but after consulting with a collegue decided I may have the beginning stages of Hashimoto's despite the low TSH and that we should wait for a couple of months a retest again.

In general my symptoms include fatigue (I sleep alot), hairloss, weight gain, and occassionally headaches. I don't know if they are all related to this or not...The only other irregularity in my blood test was a low HDL, high LDL but total cholesterol within limit (197).

I have been reading about thyroid disorders and am finding it hard to wait - both my parents are cancer survivors (my mother 3 times breast cancer - both breasts, my father prostate) and both suffer from thyroid (my mother - is hypo, my father had some for of hyper which cured itself after 2 years).

Would your advise be similar to my GP's ?

Thank you in advance,
Tali

Other than the nodule, your doctor is wise to wait and see what is going on.

It is possible that the nodule may be large enough that it should be biopsied, but I am not sure what size they consider small enough to ignore.

From the description of the ultrasound, I would guess that you have thyroiditis. If that is true, your levels will change as it subsides, and then you may need medication, or you may just need monitoring.

The nodule is the big question, as well as the cyst inside the right lobe. They may need close monitoring or biopsied.

One of the other members with more knowledge may give you some input about that.

Hi!

I just wanted to bring up your post.  Many people on here can offer words of wisdom.  I am relatively new to this, so I can't advise.  I'm sure someone here will :)

Good luck to you!
