The range for B12 is often something like 300-900, but keep in mind you will want to be in the upper part of that range. Anywhere below 500 is very low. So you will want to double check that. If low, you can take B-12 tablets-- look for methylcobalamin rather than cyanocobalamin for better absorption. I recommend that in conjunction with a good B-complex, which is good for energy overall and never a bad idea, even if B-12 is looking good.
You can buy a pill splitter at any drugstore. This is the easiest way. Does Armour have a split line imprinted on it? I know Naturethroid does but Armour may not. That line makes it a bit easier in a pinch to split it with your teeth, but in any case you will want a pill splitter to do it right. Alternately, you can ask the pharmacy to call your doctor and fill your new prescription for the 60mg now, but dispense as 1 1-grain and 2 1/2-grain pills, or even 1 1-grain and 4 1/4-grain. This way you will have less pill-splitting to do. They might grumble a bit (more work for them!) but you have the right to request this. Most pharmacists will work with you if ask nicely!
Give yourself several days to adjust to each new raise. I always felt a bit odd the first 2-3 days of each raise as my body adjusted. Hard to explain to anyone who's never experienced it, but it was like all the vitality, focus, and warmth was returning at once. Kind of overwhelming at first, but after several days the body adjusts and you start to feel normal. Keep in mind that after 4-6 weeks on any given dose you will get an additional boost as the T4 in the pill starts to kick in, so after you reach 2 grains I would dose up in 4-6 week intervals as needed so as not to go overboard.
Thank you for responding. My last labs done on July showed that my B12 was fine but my Vid D was very low. Doctor told me to take 10,000 IU a day for 8 weeks then drop down to 5,000 a day after that. I wasn't splitting my dose prior till yesterday when the doctor told me to start taking 60mg. I still have a bottle of 30mg and my doctor left my refills at 30mg till my next visit (12/31), I'm assuming he'll give me an Rx for 60mg at that point. I had already taken my 30mg as usual in the am so figured I'd take the other pill later that day. I had the warm feeling in my head, a weird headache that came and went, and mild heart palpitations. Though I didn't feel hyper my husband said I was talking faster then usual. Hahaha! Other then that I slept very well.
I don't have a pill splitter so how do you split the pill without it falling apart? My husband attempted to split his Levothyroxine last week and it fell apart.
Update: after emailing my doctor with my symptoms, he raised my dose to 60mg a day.
Have you been tested for ferritin levels lately? This is especially important if cold intolerance is a symptom.
Vitamin D and B12 are also important tests. Deficiencies in either can lead to symptoms similar to those of hypothyroidism.
