Problems with Synthroid?

Hello there,

I am a 34 year old female who has had hypothyroid since the first of my first son in 2004. Since that diagnosis in October of 04, i have been on levothyroxine..the generic brand. My condition has been fine since finding the right level of medication....that is until i moved Doctors. My new doctor over this past summer thought i should go on the actual synthroid....he said it was better to be on that. Well, since then, i've quickly gained about 10 lbs, have severe headaches, am extremely tired again ALL day long, am often very hot/sweaty and just no energy for my sons, who require a lot of energy!

I am hoping to go back to visit my endocrin. this week...but can you offer me any advice in the meantime? I want to go back on the levothyroxine b/c i was totally fine on that. What do you think?

Thank you very much in advance.

Laurie

Symptoms tell a lot about thyroid state.  In addition you can get a good indication by testing your normal temperature several times a day for several days and comparing the average to the optimal of 98.6.  Here is a good link on temperature effect on metabolism.

When you get any further testing done, be sure to get the doc to check your free T3 and free T4 along with TSH.   People with hypothyroidism seem  to do best when free T3 is in the upper third of its range and TSH in the low end of its range.

I have been switched many times in the last year. Been on same dose with everything. What were your last labs??? Also, I would go with what made you feel best. i am best on synthroid, but everyone is different. I was taken off armour, I was put back on syntrhoid Been almost three months on that. It just depends on what you like not what the doctor likes. I would mentoin that too. Good luck. I have watched the weight thing go up and down, I would't worry unless you pack on 50lbs at once for no reason. Its just another stress thing. It will come off. Good luck
