Were total T3 and TSH the only tests run? Please post the T4, and is it total of free?
Which antibodies were positive?
T4 is 10.7 (range 4.5 12.0) and free T4 is 1.55 (range .93-1.60). I really don't see the antibody results on the copy of labs that I have. Family dr did say he has thyroid antibodies but I don't know which one.
Have you had any answers/suggestions on your son? My son, 34yrs, has Hashimotos & is on thyroid meds (for years). Couple months ago he started with rash, severe, and has gone to allergist, dermatologist, md, endo, and has no answers. Endo gave him a different thyroid med, with less fillers,to see if this would help with rash, but he just went into severe hyperthyroid mode & had to reduce the new med. I need to get his test results to post to see if anyone has ANY info as this is severe and no help from doctors.
Any suggestions, please?!
TT4 is high in the range, and FT4 is right near the top. So, according to labs, it would appear your son is hyper or borderline hyper.
Since we know he had elevated antibodies, this has to be either Graves' disease or a hyper phase of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (thyrotoxicosis). Sometimes, in early stages, Hashi's (which is eventually hypO) can be characterized by swings from hypo to hyper. Which one would depend on which antibodies were elevated. Elevated TSI indicates Graves', and TPOab and/or TGab indicate Hashi's.
I think if I were you, I'd push to see an endo. As you said, you've already seen an allergist, and that was a dead end. Your son's total T3 is above range, and his T4s are close to the top. We don't have to be out of range at either end to not feel well. If your PCP ordered an uptake, do you think that might make getting a referral to an endo more likely?
When you have results to post, please do (don't forget to include reference ranges). If you go to the top of the page and click the orange "Post a Question" button, you can start your own new thread, and we can address your concerns directly.
Thanks for the info. I'm not hoping for bad results, but I am hoping that the uptake will lead to an appt with an endo. He is 13 so insurance said if he did go it would have to be a pediatric endo which the closest one is 2 hours away. It's crazy there is so much "red tape" to go through to get answers for thyroid issues, or anything. I will try to investigate and see which antibodies were elevated and get my hands on those lab results. Thanks.
Did the endo not thing the rash was related to Hashimotos? I have done a lot of reading on the internet about rashes, hives and angioedema and their link to hashimotos. There is a government study from 2011 that says 25% of people with rash, hives and angioedema that is not resolved with antihistimines and no known cause are later diagnosed with hashimotos. My doctors don't think there is a link to the two. But I have read a lot of people think there is a connection. Sorry, I don't have any answers for you as I'm very new to this subject.
