Newby ))

I was diagnosed just about two months ago with hypothyroidism due to the radiation treatment for my breast cancer.
It seems that the minimal dose, 25 mcgm, was doing the job (I am 67 y.o. female).
Last month my family doctor switched me to the Atenolol (from Hytrin).
Suddenly my hypothyroid symptoms are back, I have a chest pain every evening, and my sleep is interrupted during each night at least twice.
I can't find any info regarding the Atenolol and hypothyroidism, but I understand Atenolol lowers the the amount of thyroid hormone when one has it in excess...))
My next appointment is in January.
Shall I wait and continue taking Atenolol, or switch back (gradually) to Hytrin ?

I take both atenolol (a beta blocker) and levothyroxine.  I started the atenolol after starting levo because the levo increased tachycardia.

My endo now prescribes the atenolol along with the levo, and he says they do not interact, nor does the atenolol require you to increase your levo dose.

My guess is that your hypo symptoms have not returned, but you are having side effects from the atenolol that look like hypo symptoms...fatigue, low heart rate, etc.

I found that the atenolol reduced my heartrate drastically when I first started taking it, but that came back after a short time, and it's been closer to normal since.

However, I have to agree with thelma also...why change what was working for you well?  I wouldn't wait until January.

why the switch? and if you're hypothyroid you don't want to take something to LOWER thyroid hormone.....hypo means the thyroid doesn't produce enough hormone and we need to replace that with t4 or t4/t3 meds..i've never heard of the drugs you're taking, but if you're having symptoms on the new one and didn't on the first one, i would go back to what works...give the doc a call

Irene, welcome!

I haven't heard of Atenolol. I'm on Synthroid, and so far so good.

I'm confused. Are you hyper or hypothyroid?

Take care...
