Normal TSH and Total T4. Elevated Free t4

Hello,

My newborn had his newborn screening done. His T4 was low but TSH was normal. Doctors advised a repeat newborn screening and still T4 was low with normal TSH. Then TSH, Total T4, Free T3 and TBG serum test was ordered. The serum results came back with normal TSH and T4. But the Free T4 is a bit elevated.

How do I intrepret the results? It was a sign of Hypo and serum tests show the signs of Hyper.

Please advise.

Thanks

Hello! my daughter was born without her thyroid gland. Not common, but it can happen. Not worth taking a chance. Make an appointment ASAP with a pediatric endo. Are you nursing and was the baby born early? Do you or anyone in family have thyroid issues?

It would be more appropriate to consult with a pediatric endo on this matter. Infant levels may be similar or different to children or adults.
You might even post this question over on our thyroid expert forum to Dr Lupo. It can be hard to post a question as he can only take so many per day, so get on there early and dont give up.
Wish I could be of more help, but wouldn't even dare to guess when it comes to newborn.  :)
