I've had hypothyroid symptoms for at least a year, and after finally finding a decent doctor to treat them (first one wanted to put me on diet pills...), I was then referred to an endocrinologist in February when my labs weren't following a logical progression.
He ordered an ultrasound and a slew of blood tests, which led to being diagnosed with Hashimoto's last month and being sent for a biopsy "just as a precaution."
Turns out that was a good plan because I was diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer last week.
Saw the ENT surgeon this week and he said with my "considerable mass" of about 2.5cm that I might have had this cancer for the last ten years, maybe even twenty.
Is that really possible?? I'm 33, and it's just really freaky to think about the possibility I've had this for a third or more of my life.
I was just curious if anyone had ever heard of such a thing. My Endo did say it was a very slow growing cancer, but I didn't think he meant THAT slow.
Surgery is a month off, and I don't know if I should be more worried that it might have spread because it's been there that long, or less worried since it's already been there that long.
Do you have any abnormal lymph nodes?
The papillary tumors can be present for long time but in this case they are smaller than 1 cm.
