Pseudohypoparathyroidism problems

Hi, I am a 45 year old woman and in the last year I have had a lot of tests for bone pain. Recently my consultant has said that one of my parathyroid glands is enlarged. I have an alkaline phosphatase level of 533, and calcium level of 2.12. Has anyone else had similar problems, as all the pain and extreme tiredness is really getting me down.

Dd  you have the genetic test - is that why your doc is calling it
Pseudohypoparathyroidism? Why the genetic form - does this run in your family?

What is your PTH? Why not put you in a study right away and get your put on synthetic PTH so you can get better!

I have borderline hypoparathyroidism - my PTH is low, my ALk phosphatase is high, but I have managed to keep my cal normal by drinking gallons of milk.

Have you had a dexa scan lately? I would find a bone endo and get treated. Take D3 too and that will help. Why have they not started you on meds this very instant?

I think my consultant is waiting on results of an ultrasound scan to confirm that my parathyroid gland is enlarged before sending me for surgery. Unfortunately though, I am still waiting for a date to have this scan.

PTH = parathyroid hormone. It can be, er, through the roof without being genetic. It can be a small tumor on your parathyroid - and be hyperparathyroidism and need to be treated with surgery.

Why has he not sent you for surgery? You have the enlarged gland? The things do not have to add up. I have hypoparathyroidism - my PTH is low, but my tests are all over the place too.

I would find a bone endo.

No, I have never had a genetic test, although my consultant has talked about it, and is likely to do it soon. I have no idea why mine is called pseudohypoparathyroidism, that's just what they called it 33 years ago, and no, it doesn't run in my family.

I don't know what my PTH is, I just know that my consultant said it 'was through the roof'. At the moment he is trying to find the reason for this, and the latest suggestion is that one of my parathyroid glands is enlarged, I am waiting for an ultrasound scan to confirm this.

My alk phosphatase is very high, and although I am on a high dose of calcium supplements, my calcium remains too low.

I have had a dexa scan lately, which was normal, also a full body x-ray, a full body nuclear bone scan, a nuclear parathyroid scan. Apart from the parathyroid scan, all the others were normal.

I wish they would start me on meds for this, but I think I am a bit of a puzzle, as my symptoms do not all add up.

Many thanks for your interest.
