Quite Smoking and the Hyper thyroid

by bdazzled, Aug 28, 2009 07:41PM
Does anyone know of a link between quite smoking and the onset of hyperthyroidism.  I noticed a few members mention this in there questions.  I also quite smoking then was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism

The only thing I can say is that my endo feels strongly that stress can trigger autoimmune disease.  Quitting smoking IS stress, believe me, I know.

Interesting question!  I myself quit smoking in March of 09 and in early July 09 was diagnosed extremely hyperthyroid.  In fact, at my dr. appointment I told him I was going to start smoking again because I was healthier when smoking!! { lol }  I don't know if quitting smoking causes thyroid disorders, or maybe when you are smoking you are suppressing your thyroid { not good either } but this would definitely be an interesting topic to keep exploring!

Mellowscout...joyful.

I TRIED to quit in November, and was diagnosed with hashimotos that following February.  I agree with bdazzled....I believe that the stress triggered it.  Very interesting post!

Mine is hereditary but would possiblky say that the stress factor in triggering it was...quitting smoking.
After smiking for 31 years a packet a day then cold turkey.....enough to shock anyones sytem lol.
But I dont regret giving up smoking.
It been 2 and half years now since I smoked.
The smell makes me feel sick now so doubt I would go back to it.

I quit smoking in Aug '07 and was dx'd in Jun '08.  Only I'm hypO w/Hashi - I think most of you guys are/were hypER w/Graves -- wonder if THAT makes a difference??

Only thing is: I think I've had the problem for many years - just that no one ever thought to check my thyroid, so it never got caught until I felt so bad, I literally BEGGED them to let me get tested....... voila.........
