Recent Dx of Graves Disease...Methimazole?

Hi everybody, I'm a 23 year old female who has recently been diagnosed with Grave's disease. I am starting Methimazole and Propranolol for treatment. I am curious to know if any of you have used these, and how effective were they at treating your symptoms? (My symptoms are: fatigue, tachycardia, palpitations, ^ systolic BP, shortness of breath, muscle twitches, eye twitches, heat intolerance, and restlessness.)  Also, did starting Methimazole make you gain weight? I am really terrified about gaining a lot weight lol because I just lost 24 lbs and I don't want it back, ha!
I am anxious to start feeling better soon. I have only had active Grave's for roughly 4 mos or so, but it has really put a damper on my housework and schoolwork. I find that I have little motivation to do anything because I always have very little energy! Please someone send me some encouragement about Methimazole :) Thanks!

I have been on methimazole and atenolol for hyperthyroidism fo 5 months now.  Atenolol works very well and quickly. Still have some symptoms but less severe. I know potential list of side effects of methim are scary but not too common I think. When I went a little hypo I was really tired and gained a couple pounds in spite of dieting and exercise. It is extremely difficult to lose weight on meds. But easier to maintain so you should be okay.  Dont be afraid to have md check labs if you start gaining and have hypo symptoms. I'm still new to all this and still learning. This is a good site with many helpful experts

I was on it for 3 weeks with no problems, it's very effective. Don't worry about weight gain, they will test you monthly to see if the dosage is too high and will draw back. I could actually ''feel'' myself headed hypo and stopped the meds myself(all labs are normal and have been for months) but did not gain weight!

Yes, I was the exact same age as you when I went hyper/graves. I was also on the medications for the racing heart....

Please work with your doctor at keeping this at bay. I say that because I was undiagnosed and had hit a thyroid storm (twice). It is not any fun...I dropped as well to 88lbs...

Long story short, two thyroid storms, RAI, eventually TT.

All better now, some few lingering symptoms, but can't complain. Weight stayed at a healthy level, but eating healthy and staying active is very important.

Of course this was 17yrs ago for me....
