Seeking a Surgeon

My mom is 62 years old and was diagnosed with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis a little over a year ago.  She has been taking medication for her thyroid for about 30 years.

This past weekend she had a severe enough episode that she thought she was having a stroke.  Vision went blurred on one side, loss of sensation, severe headache and she collapsed.

She was taken to the emergency room and tests run.  The emergency care physician informed her that she needs to have the thyroid removed.

Complications are that she has had multiple hemangiomas (sp?) removed - one in her spine - and the doctors found a mass which they believe is another one, on her thyroid.

Need to find a listing of physicians/surgeons who specialize in the removal of the thyroid and possibly have dealt with ones with such possible complications.  Am unsure where to start looking.

Perhaps calling back the emergency care physician or hospital where she was taken and asking them for a referral might help.

I was diagnosed at an emergency room and was told I needed to see an endocrinologist before seeing a surgeon.  The endo then recommended the surgeon.  That might be a place to start, finding an endo.

Best wishes.

Dr. Steven Orten is in Dallas, TX and his number is 972-322-2344.  He use to be around where I live and is an ENT.  He also does cosmetic reconstruction.  He removed a lot of thyroids when he was here, did my aunt's and she had no complications at all.  He is an amazing man.  Truly loved him.

I'm going to put out a post and try to help you find some one closer, so stay tuned to forum.

My mom lives in the Northeast Louisiana area, around Monroe.  When I spoke with her yesterday she said that she would be able to travel to the Dallas/Houston/Fort Worth area.

Also if there is one in the Shreveport or even Baton Rouge.

Thanks.

Start by telling us where you are and then we might be able to give the name of a good one that some one on here has used.  I know an excellent one around Dallas even though I don't live there.
