Should I have been put on medication 29 years ago?

I had a thyroid cyst removed 29 years ago. The doctor never prescribed any meds. I've steadily gained weight over the years. Is this why it's so difficult for me to lose weight?

Depending on your relationship with your family doctor you might be able to get those tests done there.  I would not make an appointment with a specialist just yet.  Let's look at the test results first.

I will try to get these schedule in the next couple of weeks. I'm wondering if I have to see my family doctor first or if I can just make an apointment with a specialist. Thank you so much for your responses.

Even overlooking the weight gain, you mentioned other symptoms that can be related to hypothyroidism.  So, I think you should get tested for the biologically active thyroid hormones, Free 3 and Free T4 (not the same as Total T3 and T4), as well as TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone).  Also a good idea to test for Vitamin D, B12 and ferritin.   Low levels of each of the last three can cause symptoms, and low D and low ferritin can also adversely affect the metabolism of thyroid hormone.  Can you get those done?

I have not been tested. I am a very bad procrastinator when it comes to going to the doctor. A few years ago, I was under regular care of my doctor for a weightloss program. I never questioned her about my thyroid. I did however have it written down in my file. I guess I always assumed that since it was written down, they would automatically ask about it. I was so young when the cyst was removed, I can't remember if there was a discussion about medication or not. I barely remember going back to have the stitches removed. For years I have suffered from fatigue and depression, but have managed to push through it with the help of my husband. My diet is not the greatest, but I don't indulge in sweets, junk food or any kind of empty calorie drinks. My drink of choice is water or occasionally a cup of tea. At one point I trained for the BC 3Day walk and even then I struggled to lose weight. Thank you for your response.

Of course weight gain can be related to a number of things, including diet, exercise habits, and low metabolism due to low thyroid levels.  Do you have any other symptoms?  Have you had any thyroid related tests done?  If so please post results and reference ranges shown on the lab report.
