My HDL has never been abnormally high.
Wow stella, did you just come out of retirement again? haven't seen you around these neck of the woods since ....... well hell since i was originally diagnosed.
The cholesterol test is very interesting when a hypothyroid patient has it done.
Usually as Barb and Bruce states the LDL is elavated..... but interestingly the HDL is also abnormally high. From my understanding - again - not paying too close of attention to the "ranges" is best when hypothyroid is a problem. Taking both the HDL and LDL actual numbers and percentile them on the range is good to do. Example would be if your LDL (bad) level is 15% higher than the high point on the reference range you need to look at the HDL (good) cholesterol number and if that is about 15% higher also like LDL you may not have a real concern with cholesterol at all and the abnormal levels are usually due to the abnormal thyroid function at this time.
Thyroid is a cause of high cholesterol. I never had high cholesterol until I became hypo. Since my hypo/Hashi dx, my cholesterol has run hand in hand with thyroid levels -- thyroid levels go up, cholesterol comes down; thyroid levels go down, cholesterol goes up.
Once my thyroid levels were adequate (not just "in range", but truly adequate for me) and stable, my cholesterol level now responds to exercise (and/or lack of), even if weight doesn't.
sorry i meant to say "LDL" not "LSL"
This is a big symptom when hypothyroid. Body has a hard time breaking down the cholestorol int he blood stream (among other things).
what happens is the lack of hormone keeps the body from producing LSL receptors and these are receptors that help remove the bad cholesterol from the body. When the number of the receptors decrease, LSL accumulates in the bloodstream which then causes the increase in your LDL and total cholesterol levels.
This can cause hardening of the arteries and of course eventually lead to heart attack.
