Stopping my Synthroid for 3 days

Hi.  I have Grave's disease and hypothyroidism.  I ended up in the ER two days ago with symptoms of hyperthyroidism (tachycardia, anxiety, loss of appetite, shaking hands, etc.)  They did all kinds of tests on my heart and said that was fine, just fast.  The ER physician told me to hold my Synthroid the next day and call my Endocrinologist.  After leaving 2 messages with my Endocrinologist the receptionist called me and said to stop my thyroid for 3 days and then start again as normal and they will see my at my follow up the end of November. I asked to speak to my doctor or his nurse, but was told they were gone.  This just does not seem right to me!!  Any ideas??

Once you have Graves, you will have it for life (sorry to say).
The same thing happened to me......
I was on my usual dosage and after 5 weeks, I went hyper.
I stopped for 4 days due to bad palpitations (on the advice of my Doc) and within 2 weeks I had a TSH of over 7 and felt shocking.
Then 2 weeks later back on a lower dose, my tsh was 4.3 and the FT3 and Ft4 had gone up abit but not enough to make me feel good.
Its been 5 weeks now that I have been on the same dose and once again..hyper feelings.
So I DECREASED my dosage for 3 days instead of stopping the T4 med and that seems to have eased the hyper symptoms.
So now that a pattern has emerged for the 3rd time, I now know that I take the normal dose for 4 weeks and decrease on the 5th week.
A pain in the butt but i am a lot happier doing this.
Maybe you should talk to your Doc about 'tweaking' your meds too instead of stopping them.
There always seems to be a 'lag' with the meds so 2 weeks after having a TSH of over 7..thats when the hypo symptoms hit me hard.
I tend to advise people to log their symptoms each day and log each lab reading so that they can refer back to them to know what to do in regards to meds.
Hope that helps :)

I had the radioactive iodine treatment done about 15 years ago and was told that i am now hypothyroid, however, I still have Graves.  I really think I need to find a new Endo.  Thanks for your feedback!

I have been advised to stop mine for up to 4 days when extremely hyper (I have Graves too) but I sure as h*ll paid for doing that 2 weeks later...my TSH went to over 7 and it was shocking.
Stop for 2 days at most then start on a lower dose and work yr way back up SLOWLY to yr usual dose.
How can you be Hypothyroid if you have Graves?
Just curious.
Have you had permanant treatment?
Post here a bit of yr history as its hard to comment without the full facts.
All the best :)

I take 0.2 mg.  They did do blood work, but I cannot get anyone to give me the results.  after doing a lot of reading and discussing with other people I have opted to started back at half my normal dose.  I will be trying to get a hold of my endo early tomorrow morning.

What dosage of synthroid are you on? What are your latest test results?  They must have done some thyroid tests in the hospital.

It does seem strange that your endo would tell you to stop the med for 3 days, then go back on the same dosage -- I would think they'd want you to start out lower and increase it gradually, but I'd have to know test results to comment more than that.
