Synthoid

My mother had surgery last week to remove an enlarged thyroid from her throat.  Today, the doctor prescribed SYNTHOID (120 mg) for her to take.  My question is:  should he have prescribed the medication right after the surgery, or was it ok to wait a week?  He had her take OD-CAL (500 mg) for the past 7 days, but we are wondering why she wasn't taking the SYNTHOID last week as well.

Please advise.

Thank you

Had my thyroid removed on 7/14/08, I was told they wait until pathology comes in if it is malignant they do other treatment before starting Synthroid.  I guess if you are doing radiation or other treatment that has to be done first.

I can't answer your question, but I can give you my experience. . .I had a total thyroidectomy on 8/4 and they started me on synthroid (.175) the day after surgery, but I have read on this site of people who have started later.

I'm assuming the od-cal is a calcium supplement?
If it is, good for your doctor, my calcium levels dipped after surgery and I've had a hell of a time getting the levels to stay up.

I'm sure the helpful folks here will give you a more definitive answer.

Best of luck to you & your mom!
