Synthroid

I started taking 25 mgs. of synthroid on Sept. 4th, and right away I've had relieve from a lot of my symptoms, including indigestion & heartburn. Probably is the placebo effect. Either way I'm still symptom free except for the heartburn, that's actually worse than before taking synthroid. I am having it all day. Therefore, I'm not sure if the synthroid is the cause or if it may be caused from me drinking my morning coffee without taking the protonix. Due to having to wait 4 hrs. after taking synthroid. So, I'm thinking about changing my time from taking it at 7am to 4am. This way I can take my protonix before drinking coffee. I can't wait for 4 hrs. after being up to drink my coffee, because by then I'll have a headache. Does anyone know if it's ok to switch times in taking synthroid?

Sorry, I haven't had the chance. My daughter just called to let me know how my grandchildren's open house went at School. I'll catch you in the morning. I hope you feel better after drinking your vinegar elixir, lol! Night & sweet dreams.

Did you PM me? Haven't gotten anything and I'm off to bed in a few (I'm old and my day tends to end pretty early...lol), so if I don't respond tonight, I will in the morning...

When someone suggested to me that I might drink pickle or olive juice to relieve the reflux, I truly thought they belonged in the loony bin... lol

I actually ate some things this evening that's causing me "issues", so I'm off to fix a "vinegar elixir"... LOL

Thank you as always. First let me start by saying, you're a angel in taking the time in helping others understand this disease. I would be so lost, if it weren't for you & people like you that are willing to take the time and educate so many of us. :)

I'm gonna try that in the morning, & will let you know if it worked. You've some great ideas about the pickle juice, olive juice, lol! I'm just scared if my problem isn't that I'm getting GERD from not enough acid, that it will make it worse. I do eat dill pickles and sometimes I get indigestion. As for the green olives, I can eat them in foods but not alone, lol! I will try anything that gives me relieve, but don't want to make it worse.

I agree that acid reflux/GERD is a major symptom of hypo. as well as all the other symptoms I was having. I just started taking 25 mgs. of synthroid, so I think with all other symptoms going away, and not the acid reflux that my levels aren't adjusted as of yet and boy I can't wait to get rid of the acid reflux. I don't burp up sour anymore. Just a discomfort like indigestion as if something is stuck. I will burp, but it's real hard to get it up if I get it up at times at all. It's just a horrible & painful feeling.

I'm hoping my PCP who believes in just treating levels before symptoms, is easily persuaded when I go on the 25th, lol! I have a whole bunch of material for him to review. He's pretty easy going, so I'm praying.

I'm gonna PM you

Try to separate the Synthroid from the Protonix by at least 30 minutes to an hour, if you can, just to give that synthroid a "head start".

Just as an "afterthought" have you ever tried drinking some dill pickle juice or olive juice when you have the GERD?  I know it sounds silly, but quite often GERD is caused by not enough acid, rather than too much...

Now that my thyroid levels are adequate, I rarely have acid reflux anymore, so no longer take prescription med, but I often find that a couple tablespoons of dill pickle juice, olive juice or vinegar/water/honey does as much good as the prescription med did..

Another thing you should be aware of is that acid reflux/GERD is a major symptom of hypo, so until that goes away, your levels probably aren't adjusted quite right, yet.

Yes, I'm very lucky other than having the heart burn. I've noticed a big difference in my symptoms. Knock on wood, so far I'm not having muscle spasms, burred vision, not depressed, ect. the only thing I noticed is that I've the increasing heartburn and nothing is helping anymore. Therefore, I'll take Barb's advice and go from there. You have a good evening.

Thanks once again for helping me out. I really wish I would've known that, because I'm really suffering with this heartburn. I will start taking in with my synthroid in the am, instead of waking up at 4am just to take a pill. What a pita, lol! I will try this tomorrow. :) Have a good evening.

Lucky you...

It usually takes many to feel a difference on T4 medicine 4-6 weeks...

I take mine at 4am every morning...

It wouldn't matter if you took your Synthroid at 4:00... I used to take thyroid med at 3:30, when I was still working, because that's what time I had to get up for work.

I never took Protonix, but I was on Aciphex for years.  I always took my thyroid med first thing when I got up, then my Aciphex and BP meds about an hour later.  What you really have to watch out for and make sure you keep the 4 hour separation is vitamins/minerals, such as calcium, magnesium, etc.

I currently take my BP med and fluid pill, along with my T3 med, about an hour after my Tirosint (T4).

You could also try taking your Protonix at night, if you really want to keep that separation.
