I don't know what one alpha is.
But a usual treatment for low calcium following thyroid surgery is calcium and Vitamin D (rocaltrol). Can you ask your doctor if there is any alternative medicine you can take for this?

Caltrate is not the recommended product to be taking. It is not very good at dissolving in the tummy and being taken up by the body.
You need calcium citrate (that is not a brand but the type of calcium) you can get this at any health food store and some of the larger chain supermarkets stock it quite cheaply. Alternatively buy online!
Yes, do take Vit D as well, since you are low in calcium after surgery, due to the parathyroid glands either damaged, removed or bashed about! This will help the absorption of the calcium . DO NOT take calcium with in 4 hours of taking your medication for thyroid and usually best to take it later in day.
