FNA: GOOD, BAD OR EVIL???WHO HAS HAD IT??
Okay, after reading a post on here the evils of FNA has left me wondering. I am sch for a US in March and Dr has suggested he will do a biopsy. If my doctor wants to do a FNA I want to be prepared. Has anyone had good experiences or do most suggest against it??
I have hashi's as well as a nice selection of other wonderful things....from Two Pituitary Tumors ( last Surgery in 2005) to Extreme Pain Everywhere. Will spare you the gorry details..lol I also have a obstruction of some type in my Parotid gland?? Not a tumor in the gland nor is it stone. Was checked at MD Andersen in Houston, TX. They don't know what is causing this extreme swelling the size of a tennis ball in my right side of my face when I eat. Waiting on a new procedure to come out that will telescope thru the mouth up the tube to the parotid. Anyone with this or pituitary tumors out there???
Seems like my entire endocrine system is affected.

Now for red and rondoo...Educate an ignorant beginner...when my doc said he may do a biopsy, is he possibly talking about FNA? He only said the word biopsy. Have had FNA and biopsy on breast as well as lumpectomy...but I am not sure about this one.

I had 4 FNA biopsies over a period of five years due to a thyroid nodule that continued to grow. I had 2 in doctors office and 2 in hospital which were ultrasound guided. I refused the local anesthetic every time because I always seem to react to it. I do have a high tolerance for pain but I did not feel the procedure was that bad. If you don't have any problems with local anesthetics it should be a lot easier. My only issue is that all my biopsies were negative but when I finally decided to have the nodule removed because of size it was found to be Stage 2 papillary thyroid cancer. They will tell you that the biopsies are not 100 percent conclusive and especially if nodule is large. Hope this helps as far as FNA. Good Luck.

I have had one on my left side. Hurt like heck and found 'indeterminate' cells. Had left side out and it was Follicular Adenoma with cellular changes.
Then had 2 on the right side and they were VERY difficult to get to, but this time showed Hurthle Cells So right side came out. Yep it was Hurthle cells with cellular changes. Icky poo.
I can tell you there are always risks in any procedure. Yes, I bled alot with the 2nd FNA, yes, it hurt like buggery, yes in the wrong hands and with no ultrasound to guide it can be even more risky, but FNA's are a magnificent tool in diagnoses. Had they said, Just let's do a waitful watch, I would have been dead within the year.
