Thryoid the metabolism regulator

I had a thyrodectomy in 2001. At the time of my surgery I weighed 162lbs.  Eight years later I now weigh 220lbs. I have been on several different strengths of levothyroxine.  I believe that it is o.k. just for today.  Would I benefit from the old formula which contains both the T-3 and T-4 hormone?  I am at my wits end.  I have tried everything.  I never stopped exercising and eating healthy;however, there is no indication in my weight and BMI (47%) that what I am doing is helping me.

Would you recommend the naturoid for me?

Just because you are on levothyroxine does not mean that you are adequately medicated to offset your thyroidectomy.  If I had to guess, at your weight a full daily replacement amount would probably be at least 200mcg.  What thyroid tests are being used to determine your med level?  Could you please post results and reference ranges from your last couple of thyroid tests?  If you haven't been tested for free T3 and free T4, then that is something that you should insist on with your doctor.  Free T3 is the most active thyroid hormone, and  largely regulates metabolism.  If you are under medicated or incorrectly medicated, there is no way your metabolism will be at the level that is normal for you.

I think you might like to read a previous post that I found to be so very interesting, because it is about the effect of thyroid on metabolism.

I was having some major problems with my metabolism.  I am a nurse and I thoroughly researched all the scientific research on the internet and at the medical library.  I, too was going to see doctors who would not help me.  Fortunately, I found a doctor who gave me armour thyroid despite "normal" levels. I brought him a RMR test that showed my BMR in 750-900 range which is very low, I was cold all the time. I was fatigued. When you have to get in the tub 2-3 times a day to warm up your body, you got a problem  I have fake nails and suddenly I wasn't needing to go as normally to have them filled they had really slowed in growth. I put together my own research on my body.   I started taking the medication as prescribed and he adjusted accordingly until I was free of symptoms.  I documented all the thyroid lab work before and after treatment.  I went and had metabolic testing to test my bmr and it measured normal for my age and weight and I was symptom free.  I then tapered myself off the thyroid and within 2 months all symptoms returned and metabolic testing once again was done, and BMR was extremely low. Back on meds. normal. You know your body best and I am not afraid to put the research in front of a doctor's face.  The human body is not black and white.

Hi and welcome.  I'm not sure of your age .. I'm a bit older so they say the metabolism slowing down is from age for me along with my Synthroid.  Interesting to see what others think as they answer your post.  WELCOME!
