Thyroid nodules

I have a nodule 2-3cm. I am nervous about the two options I have:1) biopsy 2) thyroidectemy.  My doctor says eventually it needs to be removed because it will continue to grow.   I was thinking if it needs to go  just go ahead and get it over with and skip biopsy because im scared of a needle going in my neck.  I am only 32 and very concerned about being on meds the rest of my life. I'm not sure what to do. Any suggestions?

The choice is yours, but generally the cold solid nodule should undergo biopsy prior to removal if :
it has irregular borders;
increased blood flow
calcifications;
rapid growth.
the laser ablation minimal invasion procedure is undergoing the trial but nodule of this size is usually removed with entire lobe.
the biopsy will show with 80% accuracy if cancer is present, so complete thyroid removal along with RAI will be in order eleminating the second surgery,opposite to the  case whenonly one lobe is removed and then cancer is found in it.

The nodule was cold.  He said It would continue to grow and eventually would need to come out, but a biopsy would tell if cancerous or not.

Give us a little more information.

What are your symptoms?  What is your diagnosis?  What are the results of your imaging studies (ultrasound, CT, MRI, etc.)?  What are the results of your labs?

See, we ask a lot of questions around here but it helps us give better answers.  :-)
