Thyroid problem

by kate122, Jan 22, 2008 06:31PM
Ihave been hypothroid for over 25 years and have just had my thryoid test come back high. The main reason I went in to get tested was i have been tryin to lose weight and was successful in losing about 30+ pounds and then got stuck at the same weight for about a year. Not changing my diet or exercise regime. Now all of a sudden I started gaining weight and yet my tests came back that my thryoid was running high and they are going to reduce my medication. How can that be?

Have your adrenals checked.  Adrenal fatigue has the same symptoms as hyptohyroidism.  Get a full panel blood test done including metabolic panel, DHEA, Vit D, cortisol and B12.

Don't understand your question as regards to weight or what you are referring to as your level being high??  If your level is on the hypo side/high, meds. should be raised and if your level is on the hyper side/low,  meds. should be lowered.

Let me clarify...my last tests came in that my my thyroid was running high so the Dr is goingto lower my dosage. But if my dosage was making my thyroid run at a higher rate than it is supposed to why would I be gaining weight, I would have thought if I was not getting a high enough dosage that I would be gaining weight not if i was over medicated.

You can gain weight if you're hyperthyroid or hypothyroid. Everyone reacts different.

When you say your thyroid is running high, do you mean your TSH is too low? That would be hyperthyroid.

If your TSH is too high, you're hypothyroid.

So by what you said, "Let me clarify...my last tests came in that my thyroid was running high so the Dr is going to lower my dosage," I would ascertain that your TSH is too low. That's why the doctor is lowering your medication.

I agree with Graveslady she is right!!! if your levels are on the low side( hypo state ) meds should be raised, and if they are on the high end ( hyper state ) then they should be lowered, and if your TSH is too high you are HYPERTHYROID NOT HYPOTHYROID it works opposite, take the range from ( 0.3 - 5.0 ) the closer your TSH gets to the ( 0.3 number it is the hyperthyroid state...and yes you can gain weight being hyper or hypo if you gain weight while being hyperthyroid generally what has happened your thyroid has become TOXIC, I am living proof of it and just had to have a total thyroidectomy to resolve it to get some form of balance back in my body, I hope this clarifies some things for you, Good luck to you
