Are you hypo on synthroid? Have you had any labs done?
I, too, am a firm believer in herbal and natural remedies. I believe that the human body has an amazing ability to heal itself. However, when it comes to thyroid you may be better off with a good Dr. and prescriptions.
There are so many different things that can go wrong with your thyroid and treatment depends on your condition.
Last year I was diagnosed hyper from a hot nodule. I had difficulty finding an Endo who had the time to see me. So I went for accupuncture and Chinese herbal formulas. The herbs were very effective and expensive. $120/month and not covered by insurance. I ended up in the ER 2 weeks after the herbs ran out. The prescriptions given to me by the ER Dr. were $5 and $7 per month.
I'm now hypo after RAI. I'm doing pretty well on 75 levothyroixin, but still didn't feel like myself. So I added 1 kelp supplement per day. It is like someone turned the lights on! My energy, ambition, and creativity have returned. Maybe it is from adding kelp or maybe I would have gotten better without it.
Please post more details on your condition and lab results.
There are NO natural ways to make the thyroid better. Many people who are vegan or vegetarians (I am one) wish to do the natural methods, but honestly there is no way that is going to happen.
The thyroid is a hormone producing machine...and it is not like taking echinachea to help cure a cold. It is quite ok to use extra vitamins etc to help the body cope. But there is nothing that will cure a thyroid condition.
A case in point' my Japanese vegetarian sister-in-law, had a diagnosed thryoid condition. Was told to take 100 mcgs thryoid replacement. She said she would cure it. A year later she was in worse state and had to have her thryoid removed. She said to me recently she wished she had not tried to cure it, and with education, now realises her mistake.
DO be careful with natural remedies too. Many contain iodine...this may actually cause your thyroid to react badly, depending if you are hypo or hyper to start with!
Cheers!
