Need help

I have a strong family history of thyroid disorder.  My grandmother was hypothyroid and took Synthroid for life.  My mother had a goiter at my age and had her right lobe removed.  Her TSH and T4 always showed normal.  I started experiencing severe signs of hyperthryroidism in May.  Severe weight loss, hair loss, trembling hands, heat intolerance, elevated blood pressure and heart rate, diarrhea, vomiting, dilation of pupils.  Family doctor put me on beta blocker and ordered TSH and T4, which came back normal.  He then ordered thyroid antibody and that came back normal.  Had thyroid scan that showed enlarged thyroid.  I had sonogram of thyroid back in 2006 that showed 2 nodules that were 6mm in size.  I had another sonogram yesterday and ENT office called and told me results.  I have 6 nodules and cyst on both sides.  They have not changed in size.  I have f/u with family doc and ENT surgeon first of August, endocrinologist appt in November.  I was just told my TSH number is .73, and was told it's on the low end of normal...I am still experiencing signs of hyperthyroid!  Please can someone help me make sense of this?

I had problems for years until last year when I almost went into a "Thyroid Storm".  Blood pressure got very high, heart rate was 130 at rest, was hot all the time, couldn't sleep, etc.  My family doctor ran tests, with thyroid being one of them.  It came back showing that I was extremely Hyper T.  To the point that he re-ran the tests.  Was worse the 2nd time around.  Sent me for the nuclear thyroid scan.  Showed no nodules but my thyroid was very enlarged.

My mother has Grave's Disease.  My fathers side of the family - my grandfather died of thyroid cancer, my aunt had Hyper T and had to have nodules removed, sister has had Hypo T since she was 10 with a very large goiter, cousin had Hyper T.  Guess it was bound to hit me:)

Hang in there.  This is a great site to come to for support!

Thank you for responding,,,and knowing I'm not alone!  It is frustrating,,,because every
doctor who has seen me looks at me and says "I can look and see your thyroid is enlarged".  And there's no endocrinologist in the town I live,,,I'm having to drive an hour to go to the one in November,,,and that was taking a cancellation!  So my family practice doctor is trying to do everything he knows the endocrinologist will want and do.  My family practice doctor obviously knows something,,,or he wouldn't have put me on the beta blocker!  I will keep pushing for answers,,,,if my mother's bloodwork always showed normal with growing goiter,,,guess it's hereditary because my symptoms are happening exactly how her's did!  I have appt with ENT surgeon first of August.  Thank you for sharing your experience, Rite760.

I know exactly how you feel, I had all the symptoms of hyperthyroidism and results came back within the normal range. It has taken a full year for it to show up in my bloods, it often happens that way. And now my results show I am swinging between hyper and hypothyroidism. But all that time I felt awful because it seemed none of the docs believed I had symptoms. So keep on pushing your doctor for more answers. It seems a long time to wait to see the endo in November. You obviously have stuff going on with your thyroid as shown by your scan!
