hair loss

Hi I need help urgently
I am on oroxine the lowest does and have been for about 10 years. In september I had decided to give up smoking and started using the highest dose of nicobate patches step one. I  usually smoke about three cigerettes a day. I noticed a large amonunt of hairloss but didnt think that it could have been the patches. I continued until November and the result was three large bald patches. I have since stopped using the patches and have given up smoking however my hair is still falling not as much as before but its substantial.please help me!

Feeling low/blue and crying is another sign of hypo. If it's ok with your other meds, take some Biotin and Evening Primrose oil (from the health food store), and wash/treat your hair with Nioxin shampoo/conditioner/scalp treatment. Once your body readjusts to no nicotin and levels out, hopefully your hair loss will subside. I would have labs again in another 4-6 weeks, with thyroid panel.

Congrats on stopping smoking!!

Hi Battie,

Please don't cry over this. I too have been losing a lot of hair - since July this year. I suffered the same thing 2 years ago and it finally stopped on it's own after 3 months, but not this time! This time it's gone on for 5 months now.

Just tell him/her about your hair loss and how concerned you are. Have you suffered any stress within the past few months? Stress can trigger hair loss. Maybe from quitting those cigarettes has caused you stress?

Please keep me posted on what the doctor says.

I also have hyothyrodism and loose my hair, as a matter of fact i loose enough that i have i to use draino in my shower at least 1-2 times a week. I have never had any bald patches, but lots and lots of hair gone, we find my hair everwhere, drives me nuts.  I also have had blood test done and mine was really close to normal also but when my dr. sent me to a specialist he did find some other blood that was not normal, my specialist tested me for more than my family dr. It took a really long time for them to find this out, they kept checking me for all different types of things. They even tested me to see if i was diabetic. I didnt think i was ever gonna find a answer. I do not take any medication for it but  they did say that in the next 5 years i will have to have my thyrod out due to the fact that it is getting so big. I hope that you find an answer soon!

I had bald patches several years ago. It is called alopecia areata. It is an autoimmune disease. The hair usually grows back, as it did in my case after several months. My endo said it is related to the hypothyroidism because they are both autoimmune diseases.
Does the nicotine patch list side effects?
Congratulations on quitting smoking!!

Could be thyroid.  Have it checked.  This is one of the symptoms of thyroid disease and adrenal insufficiency.  Have both checked.
