hypoT and adrenal fatigue

Has anyone tried the Adrenal supplements or licorice extract> Has it benefited you? After doing some research, it appears that usually adrenal fatigue comes before hypoT.

AnneMarie,

Your encouragement and sharing that you made it through, has given me hope.
My husband bullies too and that is something I am learning to not allow. I know that will help with my adrenal issues as well.

I am also glad to hear that empty nest is not bothering you as that has been on my mind as well. But I think that all this has helped me to realize that sometimes, I have to take care of me.

Thank you so much...Peggy

aawww. Gee peggy, I feel so bad about what you are going through. It does sound very similar to my situation. When I crashed, I was basically on my own to figure out how to handle getting through each day. I did a lot of "self-talk" and avoided anything violent on TV, like the news. Like you, I sought out humorous things anywhere I could find them. The preschool kids are always a great source of humor. Man, the things they say sometimes are so funny.

Oh my gosh, dealing with my husband's difficult personality is hard enough when i am at my best. It was sooooo extra hard when I was down for the count. Just the sound of his voice, or his footsteps, or his car pulling in the driveway made my last drips of adrenaline go crazy. It's like when you think of a lemon, or a pickle, your body has a physical reaction. When i had any thought of him my body had a really bad, noticable reaction.

Just know that with the proper treatment and giving yourself lots of TLC, you WILL feel better. I had myself convinced I was having a nervous breakdown and was so relieved that it was all because of low thyroid, and now I know adrenal fatigue. Be patient and don't lose hope. It's so much easier to handle the stress of difficult people in our lives when our bodies are strong. When my thyroid was finally treated and my adrenals gradually healed, I started feeling better than I have in years and years. The light-hearted "old" me from yesteryear has surfaced and it feels so good to feel this good.

Also, I am now able to completely separate myself from my husband's issues. (Most days anyways.) He doesn't seem to bully me quite as much now that I treat him like background noise and, without guilt,  busy myself with things I like to do. It also helps now that my kids are pretty much grown. One is in pharmacy school and engaged, two are in college, and the youngest is going in sixth grade. I always thought I'd have empty nest symdrome, but I don't. Everyday, sometimes many times a day, I ask God to take care of my kids and trust that He will, so that eliminates a lot of worry about their safety and wellbeing.

Hang in there Peggy. I will pray for your healing everytime I think about you. BTW, I love the Serenity prayer too.

AMN, wow we have a lot in common, I have a husband with major anger issues, worked 50-60 hours, kept the kids going, the household going, with no support from my husband, and family thinking I was making it up as he is always wonderful around them.
That upset me because they did not believe me. So, I guess, now is my hitting the wall time you spoke of.

I took a job at a womens prison, as a nurse, in the mental ward, and I think the stress from that was the straw that broke the camels back.

I am dealing with so many emotional issues and that is not good for the adrenals, so I am forcing myself to learn to let go. The serenity prayer is so true.

Anyway, I am trying to take good care of those adrenals now, I am on the 3000 vit c, magnesium, rest, vit b complex, I have found a GABA complex with inositol and Niacin that I am using, I try to watch something funny everyday, as laughter is supposed to be very good for them, due to the endorphins that are released.

I also am asking my husband to do more of the stressful, dealing with people kind of issues. He does not like it, but it is time for him to take part in the stressful things of our life, not just leave them up to me. He did not like dealing with them, so I being the overly responsible one did all that kind of stuff.

Sorry this turned into a journaling entry. I am so thankful for this forum and for the support and encouragement and validation I have received.

Hi Peggy,

Like Stella, my adrenal "surges" were over-the-top at the peak of what I now know was adrenal fatigue and undiagnosed hypoT. The surges wouldn't stop. They were very very strange and strong bursts of adrenaline - more defined than my hypoT surges. They came every two minutes - I timed them! Plus, I couldn't catch my breath. Ever. Especially when I sat down to eat. Had to keep yawning like a weirdo to fill up.

It took me oh, maybe a year to feel better. That was about three years ago and I feel good as new now for the most part. After going through that awfulness, I want to do everything in my power to take care of my adrenal glands; that's why I am interested in natural ways to support them.

Prayer, rest - and finally being diagnosed and treated for hypoT - were my main treatments for adrenal fatigue. I have four kids (three were in high school and one was in 3rd grade), plus we had an exchange student from Poland living with us for 11 months when my adrenal glands first started pooping out on me. Also, I have a husband with anger issues, work at a pre-school with lots of beautiful and energetic four-year-olds, I have watched a now almost three-year-old since he was born for a young unwed mother on my days off from work, and edit about one book a year. I felt like a zombie and couldn't handle the busyness of my life very well.

Fortunately I was blessed that I didn't hit a wall until the month the exchange student went home, and my oldest daughter left for college. My next oldest got her drivers license that month too, so suddenly my life slowed down considerably. I finally had time to hit a wall - lol! God is good!

At my rock-bottom worst - the month my household shrunk -  I could barely get out of bed for the month of August. I caught a stomach virus from my youngest daughter and that totally pushed me over the top into what I now know was full blown adrenal fatigue. It was a scarey nightmare. After lots of trips to the doctor and being told it was anxiety, my hypoT was finally diagnosed in the spring and treatment started. I very slowly started getting strong again.I remember how I spent a lot of my time seeking quiet, because my system was so overstimulated. By 7pm I was ready to crash which was a little more acceptable to my husband during the winter months

I wish I had known about this website back then. Not knowing what was happening to me was so scarey. Oh well. At least now I can read the posts and connect the dots. You are all validating what I went through and I am so very thankful that I am FINALLY getting answers to what was wrong with me. I hope my experience brings comfort to someone...

thank you for the info. I guess not expecting overnight results is the thing.

Have a good day.

When healthy - the adrenals are very strong and tough. It takes a very long time to weaken them.

When that happens - they become very stubborn and don't want help. (There like a child throwing a fit!)  LOL

It will take a long time for them to accept repair and start healing. TIME is the key.

The damage done and the repair all depends on the time it will take to fix.

Stella, Thank you so much for sharing your treatments with me. When I feel better I am going to the health food store and get some of that unrefined sea salt.

I have been doing the vit c 3000 a day for a day. THe magnesium and zinc and calcium supplement I have as well as a good b complex.

I also have started with DHEA as I read that was good for the adrenals as well.

I recently bought a nighttime supplement, supposed to help you sleep by decreasing the cortisol, but so far, it hasn't helped in that realm.

I guess I am going to have to be patient with myself, get plenty of rest, and wait it out..

It is a 1/2 tsp unrefined sea salt to a glass of filtered water in the am and pm. along with that you should be balancing with a zinc-magnesium-copper supplement daily. Vit C is super essential for the repair of adrenal fatigue. a bowel tolerance of up to 3000mg has been done - but I can only take a max of 1500.

I almost went on HC (cortisol) but changed my mind and decided to try and support them naturally. I just didn't want to risk taking another med for life if my adrenals choked out totally.

Thank God what I am doing natually is working.

It has taken me 4 months to get over the "hump " of adrenal fatigue/repair but thankfully I am not suffering it as bad as I did. The adrenal "surges" Peg talks about - I feel - are worse (for me) than when I was hypoT - symptomactically.

I still get the "sap" in the morning - I still think I am low to a slight degree - but NOT as near the 7 I had in testing when I first found out I suffered adrenal exhaustion/fatigue.

I highly recommend a book that Dr J. Wilson wrote called adrenal fatigue. My new WONDERFUL doctor handed it to me and said READ this. What and eye opener this book was for me and IT DOES cover how to cure it. I am half way through it.

It's got quizzes and results - I can't stress enough how it cleared up so many questions for me so far.

AMtlmn  I have purchased some products from a company called enzymatic. They have one that is supposed to help with the cortisol at night. I have taken it 2 nights and have not seen any benefit yet. I also purchased one for the daytime use. Maybe it takes a few weeks before any healing takes place.

Rite, I think I read it was 1/2 tsp on the salt.

If you guys don't mind, I am going to add you as friends.

I'm in the same situation as you with probable adrenal fatigue from total haywire hormones, but unfortunately I don't know any answers yet. So I too will be interested to see the replies to your post.

I don't know much about adrenal support - can you share some ideas? I read in a post that sea salt and filtered water in the morning and evening helps, but i don't know what the portions are.

Actually, adrenal fatigue should become present after a very long period of undiagnosed or staying very underactive with the thyroid.

I haven't really gone forward on anything like licorice extract - but I am trying to assist my adrenals with other things.
