inhomogeneous gland small nodule right lobe

I got my results back from my U/S on my thyroid and this is what they found

right lobe measures 4.6 x 1.8 x 1.7 cm and left lobe is 4.3 x 1.6 x 1.5 cm. the isthmus is unremarkable and measures 3mm in thickness

both lobes are inhomogeneous. in addition there is a focal hyperechoic 4 x 4 x 5 mm nodule in the mid to lower portion of the right lobe. No other discrete nodules are noted.

imaging of adjacent soft tissues show no abnormality.

DX: Inhomogeneous gland. small nodule right lobe as described

What does this mean.I am an LPN and I remember this in clinicals as possible Hashimotos Thyroiditis. But I dont remember what that disease has to do with the thyroid. Is this cancer or should I have it removed. I dont see my doctor until Jan. Can I wait that long.

thanks zee

I have one that's tiny like yours, too, and it hasn't grown in 3 yrs :)

Hi there, I think the inhomogeneous just means its not uniform throughout. I have Hashis, and my scans came up heterogeneous. Since the Hashi's was attacking my thyroid, it showed scarring or a heterogeneous( many structural changes ) look.

The percent of cancer nodules to benign is very small. You nodule is very small also, which is good. Usually they will wait to see if the nodule gets bigger. From there, they will do an FNA(fine needle aspiration) to sample the tissue and any fluid inside the nodule. Mine was 6mm and they still were able to do the FNA, so you might want to look into that, or see what their game plan is for you.

At this point, I couldn't tell you if it was cancer or not. I had a small nodule on my left lobe that they did a FNA(fine needle aspiration) sample and found the tissue and fluid to be "suspicious" from there, the doctor decided to go in and remove. The rest is history, I ended up just having my left lobe out since the nodule was contained and my right lobe looked good.

Sorry I couldn't be more help, but hopefully this gave you a little insight.
