metatisis of tyroid cancer

Hello my father had thyroid cancer in 97 and now agian in 09, but know it has moved to his lungs. He has numerous nodules on his right lung. The nodules did not take up the iodine but biopsy revealed that they were in fact tyroid cancer. His doctors are saying that there isnt any surgical options for the nodules and they will place him in a clinical trail. I know that clinical trials are not very promising and for me thats not a good option. In you view are there any new cutting edge treatments out there. I.E. Cyber knife and or removale of the lung etc. He currently is being treated at moffit. Just would like to know if some other institutes are viable options. He has one large nodule and numerous small nodules, would it be benefical to remove the large nodule. and try to treat the small ones. I.E clinical trials. We live in central florida and are willing to travel anywhere to get second opinions.

Alona is a great source on medullary cancer and she has really researched her hospitals!  I'd check into the one she mentioned!

Since the nodules aren't taking up iodine, I'm guessing they are *not* papillary or follicular, correct?

Do you know the diagnosis?  (there are four types of thyroid cancer:  papillary, follicular (including Hurthle cell), medullary, and anaplastic)

Following surgery, papillary and follicular are treated one way (with radioactive iodine) and medullary and anaplastic are treated very differently - usually with external beam radiation (since they are NOT made up of thyroid tissue and do not absorb iodine).
