Post Hemithyroidectomy

I had to go back to the emergency ward after the partial thyroidectomy to have a seratoma drained.  Has anyone had this fluid build up around their incisions?  I hope it was the last one I will need, it stung when they froze it.  They took 10 cc's of fluid out of my neck.  But I no longer feel like I have a golf ball in my throat.

I almost wish I had a drain! I'm now about 50 hours post op from a hemi thyroidectomy and have a lot of edema around my incision as well as a small amount of serous drainage. Adding to that I have tape burns from an allergic reaction to the tegaderm dressing they applied initially, so I'm all red, insanely itchy and have a lot of pressure and tightness from the edema. The dressing reaction is unfortunate, but I would think a drain would have gone far to keep this degree of uncomfortable swelling from occurring.  How much longer do you think it'll be before it starts to resolve? I've been icing it to help with soft tissue swelling.

I had a drain for about 6 days post-op, so no fluid build up. The drain was kind of gross- but I had basically no swelling, so I guess it was worth it.

Hope you feel better soon :)

Ick for you! I had no problems with both my surgeries. Onlyhad a bit of one of the intneral stitches stick out to cause a red pimple like pus thing. The doctor poked it and cut it off and no  problems after that!
It can happen there can be fluid or blood after surgery. They used to put a drain in for most people but now they don't seem to worry about it. You were one of the unlucky ones it seems could have done with a drain!
  Hope it gets better soon!
