Doctor confirmed this morning that it can be a 'very rare' side effect to the metaprolol, but is a 'visual disturbance' rather than anything to do with stroke.   He said it was 'very rare' side effect in all the beta blockers (although he didn't look the others up), and that it was not dangerous....

My fiend who has graves went blind temporarily for about 15-30 min(can't remember the exact time frame). The doctor thought she had MS, that was ruled out. We believe it was graves disease related as she does have TED. It only happened to her once.

I had that happen to me 3 times over 6 weeks just over a month ago.  I was taking metaprolol betablocker over that period and then started carbimazole and weaned myself off the metaprolol.

I am about to have RAI so will stop the carbimazole and am going back to the Doctor's tomorrow to see if he'll prescribe a different betablocker for me.

It may all be coincidence, but the type of thing I experienced was altered vision in both eyes, but the left rectifying and the right vision darkening; vision returned after about 10 minutes.    I believe mine may have been a 'TIA' which is a mini-stroke.   The doc said if I had it again he'd order a CT scan, but I think he's on the wrong track.   I'm sorry I don't know much more about it, sorry, but will be discussing again with my doctor too.
