My swollen salivary gland was brought on by the radiation pill ,part of the treatment for thyroid cancer. RAI stands for radiation iodine. It went away after a few weeks and never has bothered me sence.

Hi all, Im new here.
I just had a couple of questions after seeing your discussions about perotiditis.
I was taken to hosptial about 6 years ago with a big swollen face and kept in for about a week. So I dont know if you have had similar experiences or whether you have only seen your GP. But after hospital treatment mine went away completely and has never been back since.
I think if it is still happening to you perhaps find out about being admitted to hospital until it clears, I dont know if they treated me in a different way to how your GP is doing - but it worked for me and it could be key for you. - I am far from an expert though.
What are you referring to when you say RAI ? Sorry to be thick but I dont have a clue.
And also, does perotiditis have any other names because I have been looking for info about it online and can find hardly anything. You can normally type anything in on google and there will be loads of info and pics but im coming up short in my quest.
I wondered if any of you get this other thing - ( it may be called tonsil stones ) - little yellow/white lumps that get stuck in the back of your throat and occassionally you cough them up. They have a horrible smell to them, like a rotten smell. ( I believe it is from food which has collected and hardened and started to break down) I wondered if it could be connected at all.
Anyway, good luck in your quests, hope someone actullay sees my post because i know its an old thread.
Thank you Trish and Kat ,i will make a point of brushing right after meals, I feel better just hearing from other patients with this problem , my mind just wants to go to the cancer thing, and that only makes me stress out more.
It has changed but not gone away entirely. One thing is, I go more often to the dentist because of the lack of saliva. I go every 4 months instead of every 6. Brushing immediately after eating is more necessary because the food just doesn't break down well. I don't get the swelling anymore, which is nice.

I had RAI 14 years ago and still have the problem of blocked ducts. I usually massage and use a warm washcloth if it becomes uncomfortable. I have had up to three different ducts blocked on the same side of my face at one time...hard sour candy really does help...even though at first it seems to make the swollen cramping feelings a little more painful because you are making yourself salivate more...
My dentist and oral hygentist said that if it continues and takes longer to unblock that I might just have to have them removed. Right now, it happens but its tolerable.
You might want to talk to your dentist about it again if it bothers you on a continual basis though...

Thank you for responding, I recieved 154.500mCi...I remember after coming home my neck and face was very swollen I hardly reconize myself. You had a mega dose, didn't you. That amount for my RAI was deduced from the amount still inside me 3 days after the 6 pills I had for the WBS. do you still have the swelling? Is this something we will just have to get used to or will it leave as sudden as it apeared?
I had exactly what you describe. It would move from side to side and sometimes be on both sides. It did not start until 6 months after RAI. At first my GP thought it was mumps, but then we figured it out. Antibiotics are not recommended. It is the saliva duct blocked from the RAI. Massage and warm compress will help. You might notice a strange taste as the blockage releases. I now have too little saliva, so eating dry foods is difficult. I always need a glass of water to help break down the food. Sometimes just looking at food or thinking about it would make me swell due to salivating. Hopefully yours will not last too long. What was your dose of RAI? I had 200mci.
