propranolol and no marked improvement - please help tonight! Urgent!

hello,

i have been ill for 10 weeks and i saw an internal medicine specialist after about 7 doctors were stumped. He seems to think my hyperthyroid condition has returned after being in remission for several months. He thinks it was brought on by my illness. The main symptoms I still exhibit are: extremely fast heartbeat, chest pain, headache, dizziness, tremors, diarrhea. We are waiting for the bloodtests to come back, but in the meantime he told me to take propranolol 20mg 3 or 4 times a day. I started taking it several days ago, and my heart still races like crazy and I have heart pain. I dont know how to make it through another night like this. Can someone please advise me on some way to ease the symptoms so I can sleep ? (at least the pounding and racing heart). Should I increase dosage? Thank you!

Halifax,
I'm sorry you're feeling so ick.  I am also on a similar beta blocker since I just started anti-thyroid meds a month ago and still occasionally have really bad days of palpitations.  If your heart rate is still markedly elevated (>100) I would at least call the local ER to speak to a nurse, or call your doctor (they usually have an on-call system).  I know it's miserable to feel this way.  I take 50 mg of atenolol normally.  Sometimes that doesn't even do the trick so I'll take more, up to 100 mg.  But it's always good to talk to a doc before you increase your dosage on your own.  I hope you start feeling better...keep us updated.

I can't advise you on taking any more medication than you are prescribed.  How about your pharmacy, sometimes they can advise us on our medication.
Or what does the propranolol instructions say.

Having pounding and racing heart along with pain to where you can't sleep is not a good sign.

I'm sorry and I do feel for you, but I can't do anything for you except to tell you to get medical help some way.

I'm scared to go to the ER because i've already been there several times and I almost feel like I'm being bothersome. I dont think I have all the symptoms of a thyroid storm though. (fever, nausea, etc). What do you think? Should I just take another propranolol?

Thanks

Can you get hold of your doctor or his office or any doctors office?  If you can't then go to the ER.

You should not be in this much stress. You might be going through a thyroid storm, which is a dangerous situation needing ER attention.

Please don't put off going.
