thyroid eye disease

I had my thyroid out 7 yrs ago (non cancer). Nodules, I chose to have it removed.  I have been fine, taking 88mcg levoxyl. Recently I have had dry eye symptoms along with very achey eyes and fuzzy perifial vision. The opthomologist said migraines, then dry eye.  The dry eye specialist says it could be thyroid disease, 2 levels which are within normal range, but one is low normal and one is high normal.  FT4 is 1.2  TSH 3.48. He put me on sterioid eye drops,  over the counter eyedrops and retasis.I am trying to get my PCP to refer me to an endocrinologist, She wants to treat me herself.
My question........ Do these symptoms sound like thyroid disease? NO bulging eyes yet.
Thank you,
Ginger

The dry eye sounds like a hypo symptom.  It may be that you need to have your meds. increased.  TSH of 3.48 for someone who is in meds is too high.

Eye disease is different than thyroid disease.  Thyroid Eye Disease (TED)
is caused by antibodies that attack the eyes. Different antibodies than thyroid antibodies.  Anyone can get TED if they carry the antibody.
Your symptoms of achy, dry eye, and fuzzy peripheral vision could be early stages of TED.  Nothing can be done until the hot phase is over, 18 to 24 months after on set, and see what damage has been done. Mean while steroid eye drops,  over the counter eyedrops and retasis are the main treatment for now. Other things that help is wearing wrap around sunglasses, keep stress down to minimal, if you smoke stop! 1,000 mg of flaxseed oil is said to prevent eye dryness. Drink at least 8 glasses of water daily to prevent dehydration, and more if artificial heating is contributing to dryness. Humidifiers are helpful for those living in dry climates. Give eyes plenty of rest. Besides striving for 8 hours of sleep, pursue a restful harmonious lifestyle. For instance, too much time spent staring at computer screens causes a syndrome of sore eyes, blurred vision and headaches. Experts advise reducing screen glare and taking a 5-minute break away from the computer at least every 20 minutes. Ophthalmopathy benefits from a nutrient-rich diet and an avoidance of environmental triggers, including iodine found in salty and processed foods. Conjunctivitis can be avoided by adding yogurt with L. acidophilus to your diet. Cooked spinach and spinach, as well as supplements containing lutein are important for general eye health and help in preventing macular degeneration.
Lubricating eye drops with natural ingredients /no preservatives (especially if you have TED)and sterile.  Not something that gets the red out those can be more drying to the eyes.

Make sure your doctor takes a measurement of you eye(s) which is one way to tell if TED is progressing or you can use and compare an old photo for, then and now approach.

I have TED for approx 9 years and it hasn't gotten any worse since the first day I recognized it.

From one widow to another, Good luck!
