I read that Depo provera causes an increase in appetite which can lead to weight gain and that 2/3's of women who take it have some ( usually modest) weight gain, the rest lose weight or stay the same.
There are online food/exercise trackers, like fitday.com, that help people track what they eat and what they burn for free. A person who averages eating just 70 calories a day more than they burn will gain 7 pounds a year, so if it's a concern, a diary of intake and activity might be helpful.
Please ask your doctor about possible reprocussions from DEPO. My obgyn said it is strongly advised against now b/c of it's risk for causing blood clots.
Just a side note, I was religiously taking DEPO for two years and I got pregnant on it (confirmed by u/s). I unfortunately m/c, but I have now heard from several women who have gotten pregnant on the DEPO.
Good luck!

I would assume that it would work like any other birth control, but only stronger, so yes, some of the weight gain could definately be contributed to that. Any kind of bc makes your body think that it is already pregnant. When you get pregnant your body start saving the fat b/c our chemical makeup wants us to gain enough weight to be able to support a baby in times of stress and lack of food--as in days of old. I have known a few women who have taken it and weight gain was a huge problem. Just many of its wonderful side affects.
