Just my advice: You should ask for the exact TSH level for your home medical files. It's good to know the exact number. My HMO sends the test results by mail.
Thank you all for your inpute!! I did get more blood work done, and they said my calcium is now 9.7, and my TSH was normal. (she never gave specific numbers on the TSH levels) I do take prenatel vitamin everyday. (not pregnant) when i went to the dr. in the first place, it was for headaches, and stomach pain. He ended up prescribing me with anti-depressants, high blood pressure meds, stomach ulcer meds, anti-anxiety, and muscle relaxers. (my neck and back has hurt for months!!) i'm only 26, and he said i have the blood pressure of a 60 year old!!
I totally agree with Thaipatient, 10.3 is in the normal range but on the highest end (10.6), but usually people have symptoms when calcium levels are higher then 11.5, so if you have some kind of symptoms. .... I think you should repeat (regulary) your calcium (ionized too as Laura said) and also your TSH (free T3 and free T4), I would also check next time for vit D (1,25 (OH)2D and PTH . Are you taking any medication? some kind of vitamins?
Did the current dr say anything about following up on that? Did they retest the calcium when you went back, or was it just your TSH? Ordinarily, they’d want to do the calcium blood work a few more times to compare readings.
According to my lab, 10.3 would still be within range but it’s the highest end of it.
However, since you are experiencing symptoms, that would be cause for additional investigation. You need to make sure the dr knows about each of those. So keep a clear log of what they are. The dr knowing you’re experiencing symptoms should prompt him/her to start tracking you calcium levels. Otherwise, I would think about a second opinion.
Good luck.
Hi Jen....yes you need to get a second opinion with an endo. A high calcium level is never normal and should be looked into and tested further. Ionized calcium test, PTH test, etc. Google parathyroid disorders and read up on it.
