9 year old with Suspected Thyroid Problem

Hi,
My nine year old son is 4'8'' and 127lbs and has been suffering with depression and extreme fatigue and muscle and joint pain. Just 4 months ago he weighed 96lbs that is a 31lbs weight gain without a gain in height. He has been hospitalized twice in the past 4 months for suicidal threats with a plan. I just received a copy of the blood work from the hospitalizations and was shocked to find the Thyroid was out of range. However I don’t know what the pediatric reference range for Thyroid is. Could you please give me the pediatric reference range is for these thyroid tests, T-Uptake, T-4, and TSH?

On Feb 17, 09 test results were as follows,

T-Uptake……. 37
T-4…………..3.4 L
TSH………….1.23

On May 1, 09 test results were as fallows,

T-4…………..5.2 L
TSH………….1.41

My son has an appointment with his pediatrician on Monday and I am bringing the complete lab reports with us to his appointment. I am asking that he refer him to a Pediatric Endocrinologist.

I need to be accurately informed so thank you in advance for your help.

Thank you for your reply,

No he is not on thyroid meds.

I was under the impression that the ranges were for adults on the lab report. Because it states in the foot note (Adult) normal reference ranges.

On Feb 17, 09 test results were as follows,

T-Uptake……. 37         Units% [32-48]
T-4…………..3.4 L       mcg/dl  [6.4-13.3]
TSH………….1.23       uIU/ml   [0.34-5.60]

On May 1, 09 test results were as fallows,

T-4…………..5.2 L       mcg/dl  [6.4-13.3]
TSH………….1.41       uIU/ml   [0.34-5.60]

Thank you in advance for your help.

Your lab report should have had reference ranges on it, since different labs use different ranges.  What were they?  Is your son on any kind of thyroid med?
