Mystery Symptoms

Part I

So it's been a crazy three months for myself:

38 years old, male, 180 lbs., 6’ 2”

Symptoms (major -- or what I consider bothers me the most): Palpitations, abdominal pain, back pain (lower, sometimes just below ribs), numbness/tingling in legs and sometimes in fingers and face (both sides), chest pain, joint pain (changes), fatigue

Symptoms (minor): Low-grade headaches, occasional night sweats, changing bowel movements, indigestion, frequent urination, chills, hot "feeling" on skin (no fever), giant papilliary conjunctivitis, epididimititis, flushing, lightheadedness, vision changes (comes and goes), throbbing in left leg (back thigh, can be sharp), ringing ears, possible TMJ (at least some jaw pain), swollen submandibular glands (they’ve been that way for years, but it seems the right side has increased a little mote lately)

*Note on the symtoms, they are over the range of three months. Lately, a lot of the symptoms has subsided or lessened.

Doctors seen: Primary, ER and urgent care docs, cardiologist, urologist, neurologist, gastroenterologist, eyes-ears-nose doctor, alternative medicine

Tests: Blood work (numerous times), chest X-ray, chest CT, echo/stress, holter monitor, head MRI, urine samples, unltrasound on thyroid, heart cath, upper GI, lumbar x-ray, abdomen CT

Findings: Low potassium (back up), low vitamin D (abnormally according to primary), moderate acid reflux in esophagus, mild gastritis in stomach, kidney cysts (one in each kidney), 5 mm non-calcified non-fatty nodule in right lung, high bilirubin

Meds: Inderal 40 mg (but now going with 20 mg half-tablets), Mirtazapine 15 mg, Protonix 40 mg, Pataday and Alrex eyedrops

MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL
You have had a comprehensive workup, with multiple tests and specialist referrals.  It is unlikely that I will come up with something over the internet that hasn't already been thought of.

The cardiac workup has been complete, and would exclude many of the major heart conditions.

The abdominal pain can further be evaluated with a colonoscopy, which can evaluate for any masses or colitis.  Otherwise empiric treatment for irritable bowel syndrome can be considered.

The tingling can be further evaluated with a nerve conduction study.  Metabolic conditions can also be excluded by testing the thyroid, B12 levels and excluding diabetes.

Another opinion can certainly be sought, preferably at a major academic medical center.

Part II

Supplements / Vitamins: Potassium 100 mg, Vitamin D 2000 IU, multi-vitamin, herbal tinctures (adrenal glands, thyroid, immune, lymph/detox, kidney/bladder)

Negatives: On just about everything it seems. Heart is fine, arteries to the heart are clear, blood work checks out fine, none of the major autoimmune diseases, thyroid is fine, no concerns about gland in throat.

Conclusion: So I’m going nuts, right? Stress and anxiety and hypochondriac? The doctors seem to state stress and anxiety. I can agree that stress led to some of the symptoms, but I know my body well enough that something happened to it. The only doctor that has seemed to help is the alternative medicine fellow. His findings so far were a “virus” in my system and a staph infection. Honestly, his tinctures have seemed to help the most out of everything done for me so far. I don't want to be one of those Health channel medical shows where it took years to find out what was ailing me.

I’m not convinced I’m past whatever it is. I would like another opinion but I’m not sure who to go see. Another primary? An endocrinologist? My insurance allows it, but the endocrinology department wants a referral from my primary (who probably thinks I’m nuts by now). I have also thought about a doctor who specializes in chronic “diseases” like CFS and fibromyalgia.

Any suggestions? Any of the above findings I should follow up on? I would like to think that the gamut has been run on me that nothing serious has been overlooked and maybe just something that is chronically minor. I have actually been feeling better lately with less fatigue, so I hope that would mean it’s unlikely something serious is going on (?) Thanks in advance.

Thank you for the answers. Dr. Pho (if you recheck topics), what would you recommend for a second opinion doctor at a major medical center. Denver has a few well-regarded medical centers, but I'm not sure what type of doctor I would schedule a second opinion with. The major medical centers all seem to be loaded with a lot of specialists, but there doesn't seem to be any type of "base" or "primary" physician I would start with.

Have they ever tested you for lyme disease?  I watched a show about a girl who had symptoms that mimic rheumotoid arthritis and she tested positive for lyme.  The disease is misdiagnosed a lot.  After seeing that tv show I am thinking my husband should get tested (he has chronic chest pain).

From what I read if you do get tested do not go through an ordinary lab like Sonora Quest.  The tests have a lot of false negatives.  There are 2 tests,

Good luck and I hope you feel better.

Hi Ott,

You sound like you could be a poster boy for Lyme! You have so many of the symptoms of this multi-systemic disease (palpitations, back pain, numbness, chest pain, joint pain that moves around, fatigue, night sweats, changing bowel movements, chills, flushing, etc.)

Have you been checked for Lyme? If so, was it the ELISA test or the Western Blot? The ELISA is quite unreliable and only picks up a certain percentage of cases--it gives out too many false negatives to be trusted.

You could post the list of your symptoms on LymeNet dot org. These people can help you find a doctor who is experienced at diagnosing and treating Lyme. Keep in mind that most "regular" doctors don't know the disease well enough to be able to recognize it and treat it.

There are a lot of Americans that are told they have fibromyalgia, CFS, MS, lupus, etc. when in reality they have Lyme. And there are also a lot of people being told it's all in their head and being prescribed antidepressants and calming pills... Very sad.

Good luck to you.

Do this and you will be able to get your body to normal health.Continue the exercise once a day, for rest of life,to stay healthy.
You need to help your body to build up your immune system. The breathing exercises - pranayam is a holistic approach creating extra oxygen supply in the body and will slowly help with the health problem.Do the pranayam to see the benefits.Build up your timing slowly and after two weeks at the suggested duration you will start to notice benefits.

Bhastrika - Take a long deep breath into the lungs(chest not tummy) via the nose and then completely breathe out through the nose.Duration upto 5 minutes.

Kapalbhati -(Do it before eating) Push air forcefully out through the nose about once per second. Stomach will itself go in(contract in). The breathing in(through the nose) will happen automatically. Establish a rhythm and do for upto 30 minutes twice a day.(Max 60 min/day) Not for pregnant women. Seriously ill people do it gently.

Anulom Vilom - Close your right nostril with thumb and deep breath-in through left nostril
then – close left nostril with two fingers and breath-out through right nostril
then -keeping the left nostril closed  deep breath-in through right nostril
then - close your right nostril with thumb and breath-out through left nostril.
This is one cycle of anulom vilom.
Repeat this cycle for 20 to 30  minutes twice a day(maximum 60 minutes in one day).
You can do this before breakfast/lunch/dinner or before bedtime or in bed.Remember to take deep long breaths into the lungs. You can do this while sitting on floor or chair or lying in bed.

Bhramri Pranayam -Close eyes. Close ears with thumb, index finger on forehead, and rest three fingers on base of nose touching eyes. Breathe in through nose. And now breathe out through nose while humming like a bee.
Duration : 5 to 10 times
----
Only by doing you will benefit and will feel good that you can do something to help the body.Copy and print this to master the technique. This is  simplified pranayam for everyone and you do not have to go to classes to learn. This is for life unlike short term classes where you do it in the class then stop when classes are over.

Thank God I've finally found someone like me; although I'm female, also 38 with all your symptoms and more. I've been tested for Lymes, but it is well known that if at the time that they draw you blood if they don't catch the "bacilli", something like that it will come up negative; also the comment that you don't want to be like those on the medical show; I'm all feeling that with you.  I know a case where a young lady had seven lyme tests come back negative although she was deteriorating and very sick, then sent to Spain because the doctors thought it's in her head or she wants attention and she wasn't that kind of person; however when she got there she arrived early and there was another girl there, they got to talking and so forth; bottom line is the girl started telling the other about what she was going through and the other girl was like hey that sounds like me and I had lyme disease; so trying to make the short, the girl called her parents from Spain and demanded to see this girls doctor and she knows she is sick and it's this.  So she got her wish (the doctor was in another state than where she lived), but he sent her blood to three very good labs and sure enough she had lymes.  She suffered for a year and almost had irreverisable nerve damage. I'm so disgusted with the medical field right now because I SEEM TO BE A MYSTERY DIAGNOSIS TOO!  I'm sure I will end up on one of those medical shows telling how I suffered for 7 to 10 years and it was in front of them all along, even with negative tests and positive tests, etc.  I have no faith in doctors right now; I'm praying for a miracle.  Good luck and please let me know if you find out anything or a doctor that is competent.

Just another show of medical disgust, a women had carcinoid cancer for five years before they did exploratory surgery on her and found it; she had negative tests and MRI's, CT's, etc.  She did end up on one of those medical shows and I feel for her, you, and everybody who's life is affected and are suffering because they can't see the zebra in the horses.  They want to tell you IT'S STRESS, TAKE THIS ANTIDEPRESSANT!!

Maybe when I have more energy and figure this site out, I'll share my history and results with you and maybe you and the others have something to say or share that will help me.

Many blessings,
Shannon
