I once was at a company picnic where we were throwing softballs at this dunking booth.  My boss was in it and I really wanted to dunk him.  Long story short I slipped in the mud and landed with my left hand on the ground catching myself.  My left thumb bent all the way back.  It hurt a lot but I waited about two days to get xrays.  The xrays came back with nothing and they said it was sprained and wrapped it.  Well I let six weeks go by thinking it was a healing sprain.  It hurt so bad and I couldn't close my fist like you.  I went to the doctor and they did an MRI and my ligament had been torn the whole time - xrays won't catch that, only broken bones.  I ended up having major surgery on my hand taking a piece of tendon out of my arm and building a new ligament for my thumb.  It was the most painful surgery I have ever had including giving birth to my daughter.  DON'T WAIT IF YOU THINK SOMETHING IS WRONG.  GO TO THE DOCTOR.  Good luck!

I have a recent pinkie injury, too.  I was playing goal keeper for YMCA league soccer this summer, and got hit with a soccer ball.  My pinkie and ring finger on my right hand are both hurt, though the pinkie is much worse than the ring finger.  This happened three weeks ago, and it's still swollen.  All this time I've been telling myself that it isn't broken, because the finger looks relatively straight, but the middle knuckle (second back from my fingernail) is very swollen.  Also, while my finger is straight in regard to its not sticking out to one side or the other, the pinkie finger is bent from the joint being so swollen and I can neither straighten it out all the way, nor can I tighten my fist all the way, either (very little tightening, actually).

So, what should I do???  It's been three weeks, so I don't know if I should just let it heal up (since it's probably already set the way it's going to set), or go see a doctor, despite the fact that it's probably just a waiting game at this point until it's better??

Take your son for xrays and if it doesn't show anything watch it as it heals.  If it doesn't heal correctly it could be ligament damage (an xray won't pick up) and that requires surgery sometimes.  Don't make light of it.

And to eveyrone else besides the nurse, the boxer and a few others, how about an anger management class or two.  sheeesh

Last night i was messing around and punched a board. Come to find out i actually punched a screw that was sticking through the board directly in the center of my middle finger knuckle. I believe it went about a quarter of an inch deep into my knuckle and it hurts alot to straighten it out or touch it. Anyone know what i might have done to it and how can i make it better? Thanks
