Cyst in kidney

by Debie__0__0, Aug 29, 1998 12:00AM

My 17 yr old son had the right kidney removed 4 yrs ago. It had been damaged due to a blockage, they're not sure when. At the post surgical check up they found a cyst in the left one. In the 4 years it has shrunk from 1.5 cm to 1.3 cm. It is in an usual spot though. It is in the centre of the kidney not out closer to the wall. Could it move and cause a blockage? Is it common or something to worry about? Of course I'm worrying.

Dear Debbie,
A cyst in the kidney is something that needs to be followed with periodic radiologic studies and renal function studies, most likely ultrasound and creatinine.  A cyst is almost always in the parenchyma and rarely would be a source of obstruction.  They may increase or decrease in size however they don’t move.
Your question regarding should you worry about this cyst in your son’s solitary kidney.  I would respond by saying, it is important for the cyst to be followed over time, primarily  as to his kidney   function, but it is unlikely to ultimately cause a problem.  It is a small cyst but you still need to make sure it doesn’t to develop into a more significant lesion.  If the cyst doesn’t grow or cause pain, hypertension, hematuria (anemia)or other symptoms, the cyst will not cause your son any difficulty.  In the mean time there is nothing to worry about but rather be aware of the follow-up that should take place to keep your son healthy.  As an aside, if your son is like any other 17 year old, he is not going to want to go to the doctors office every year or so.  Make sure he knows what his situation is and what needs to be done in the future.  I would ask your doctor to discuss this with him.
