Elevated creatine, but normal BUN?

I am 28 yr old female with normal body weight (I exercise moderately) and no medical conditions. I recently had blood work which indicated that my creatinine levels were elevated (1.5mg/dL), but my BUN was normal (19 mg/dL). My MD wants me to visit a nephrologist. I can't seem to find any information online as to why creatinine levels would be high and BUN would still be normal. It seems that they either rise together or the BUN rises before the creatinine levels. Does anyone have any insight as to why this would happen? Has anyone has a similar issue? Thanks!

So what did you all find out?   I'm having the same issue.  I'm naturally more muscular (always have been), but my creatinine is 1.98, which is considerably too high.

My online reading shows weight gain, high cortisol, low thyroid, higher muscle mass, dehydration, and a lack of sleep can also increase creatinine.

I'm in the same boat: BUN is normal, urine analysis is clear (no protein or infection shown in urine), but my serum creatinine is ~1.4-1.5.  Going in for a kidney ultrasound next week.  Wondering if this SrC is normal for me ( 32 yo male, more muscle mass than average, workout 3-5x/week).  Every lab value is normal except for SrC.

my BUN is normal and my creatinine level was 7.6 when i was admitted to the hospital.  I was hospitalized one week prior with Rhabodymolisis. I am having alot of muscle pain and my doctor seems to think i should have any pain in muscles.  they have questioned me severly about use of steroids and supplements which I told them I do not use steriods but I do take supplements but not on a daily basis only when i work out.  they seem to be dancing around the idea this may be a muscle issue and continue to be agressive with its a drug im taking which they have tested with negitive results.  What could be causing this and am i wrong to believe that the Rhabodomylisis and the recent kidney problems could be linked?

Have you taken any treatment to reduce it. Whats your current level

My BUNs have been 14 with a creatinine most commonly in the 1.5s and I can't find any explanation either. I haven't even been exercising.  I'll be seeing a nephrologist soon.  Maybe they can shed some light on this issue.

Hi,

You are correct that there is an intimate relationship between BUN and Creatinine.

There are relatively few conditions that would have an elevated Creatinine without the BUN. These are usually due to muscle breakdown which would release more creatinine in the blood. Exercise may produce such an increase. Pathologic muscle breakdownwould produce sharp levels – but such states would likely be accompanied by symptoms of weakness in particular.

The values you placed are not markedly high. If you have a large muscle mass then this level of Creatinine may be normal for you. There is also a possibility of error in the laboratory which would be most suspect for borderline cases.

Stay positive.
