Frequent urination post-acute prostatitis

by nerdlinger, Sep 15, 2006 12:00AM
About 4 weeks ago, I was experiencing a variety of urological symptoms - frequent and sometimes slightly painful urination, blood from the penis, erectile dysfunction, etc. I went to see a urologist and was diagnosed after a digital exam with prostatitis. I was given a two-week cycle of cipro, gave a urine sample and was asked to return in 3 weeks. In the meantime, my GP was running a range of blood tests for an unrelated respiratory issue.

Anyway, I went through the antibiotics and, during that time, got the blood results back from my GP (everything normal, negative for any kind of infection, no signs of diabetes, etc.). Urination returned to being an entirely pain-free process, but is still frequent and often feels incomplete. I had a follow-up appointment with my urologist this morning, and a digital exam showed the inflammation of my prostate had gone down. When I mentioned that I was still experiencing frequent and seemingly incomplete urination, he conducted an ultrasound which showed that my bladder was, in fact, emptying almost completely. The urine sample I left the last time I was there was, as far as they could tell, clean.

So, basically, it would seem there's nothing wrong with me, at least in terms of prostate, urinary tract, or bladder, and I am definitely not diabetic and am free of infection. I don't drink caffeine at all and am otherwise in good physical health. However, the frequent urination persists, and is definitely not just something I'm imagining - I feel the physical need to urinate at least every couple of hours, most of the time more, and often in short spurts one right after the other. I'm at a loss as to an explanation for this.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Difficult to say without evaluation.  There clearly has been a comprehensive evaluation performed.

One option would be to test the lower GU tract with a cystoscopy to evaluate for any urethral strictures or polyps.

A transrectal ultrasound can also be considered to image the prostate (i.e. for any abscesses that may have occurred post-infection).

I would also check for metabolic disorders, including repeating the test for sugar as well as a blood test to evaluate the thyroid.

These options can be discussed with your personal physician.

Followup with your personal physician is essential.
