Is surgery necessary?

by forChris, Jun 27, 2009 07:34AM
Our son is 15 yrs. old and was recently diagonosed with a 4 mm vericocele in his left testicle. He was born with an undescended right testicle and had surgery at 18 mos for that. The doctor was able to bring it down into the sac but the tube is short, the testicle sits high and is smaller than the left one. We have seen a pediatric urologist and he said that we should consider surgery since the right testicle is already compromised and the vericocele could get bigger or effect his fertility. Right now, given his age, the doc said a sperm count would not be an accurate indicator of his fertility. On top of that, where the doc would normally compare the vericocele testicle with the "normal" one to determine if it is still developing normally, there is no "normal" one. You see our dilemma?
We think we should get a second opinion and we want the best doctor/surgeon that's available in our area (South Jersey). We're not sure if that info is available or where to find it. Can you help?
