Mega ureter surgery

My two year old baby is sceduled for surgery for a grade 5 urinary reflux. Her ureter will have to be tapered. What is the success rate of a surgery of the nature? The other ureter is currently showing a grade 2-3 reflux. Would you suggest operating both sides at the same time or should we just do the grade 5 reflux and leave the other side alone? Thank you in advance for your response.

Dear Halb
Thanks for your questions
Reflux surgery without tapering has about a  95% success rate.  Tapering does not significantly decrease the success rates for recurrent reflux,  but does have a slight  risk of ureter stricture. A stricture is a  scar formation of the ureter causing it to not drain into the bladder.   Most authors recommend correcting both sides at the same time.  The changes to the bladder  and other ureter after surgery may make the other ureter reflux more!  Having both corrected at the same time is slightly more risky for temporary obstruction if stents are not used,  but may save a future operation, decrease time on antibiotics and follow-up cystograms.
