POST TURP

Hi Doc,

My dad has gone through with TURP treatment about a couple of months back.
And now he is again getting a feeling that something is blocking the urine passage.

Can you please advise on

1. Does he have to undergo the TURP treatment again.
2. Can this be treated permanently
3. How can we avoid it to happen again

Thanks in advance

Hi,

Here are the answers to your questions:
1. Does he have to undergo the TURP treatment again. - most likely the answer is no. However, it may need reexamination to confirm this
2. Can this be treated permanently - yes, of course
3. How can we avoid it to happen again - well you have to get him reexamined and follow up with the doctor. TURP is one of the better treatment for BPH.

Hope this helped.

Hi,

A TURP stands for Trans urethral resection of the prostate. With this procedure they save of the obstruction inside the prostate.

If your dad had it about 2 months ago, he should be followed up for a review with the urologist. Bleeding should have stopped after about a week. It could be possible that there is a blood clot, however this should not be the case if it has been 2 months or more. It might also benefit him if he was on a medication like FloMax. FloMax will dialate the prostate making urination easier.

It would be best that your dad would go in for a follow up. It might require another dreaded cystoscopy.

God bless,

Ron
