bleeding 24 weeks after turp

It's been 24 weeks since my turp surgery. Everything had been fine for a while. Lately I will occasionally pass blood and then it clears up for a week or so. Everything will be normal. Then it may occur again, blood in urine and then next time gone. Yesterday I passed a large scab that I though I might be able to do. No bleeding since then so far. I am 71 years old. Is this normal? I have been taking it easy but I'd like to get on with things.

That "scab" may have just been late in dislodging. Keep an eye on it and if you have no further bleeding or issues I think you'll be able to "get on with things."

Hope you have a great Holiday. Enjoy your journal home. Be safe!

I had the traditional turp. Today no fever, my urine is clear, no bladder spasms.  Everything seems normal. I am keeping a watchful eye on it. I was surprised to see a scab this late in the game. My urologist said in the very begining that I don't go by the book. I do have an appointment with him in october when I get back to alabama. We are currently traveling in our motorhome and are enroute back to alabama.

Hi Kurby,

Welcome. I'm sorry to hear that you continue to have some bleeding post TURP. I assume you under went the Traditional TURP and not the newer Laser TURP.

Are you having any fevers or excessive leaking of urine? Are you experiencing pain or burning with urination?  Other than the occasional blood in your urine is your urine clear? If it's clear and you have no fevers or excessive leakage it doesn't sound like you have an infection. Are you still experiencing bladder spasms?

In the first weeks after TURP surgery, the scab inside the bladder may loosen and blood may suddenly appear in your urine. Usually, the bleeding stops with some bed rest and drinking fluids. So though it's a bit late in the game it may have taken you this long before the scab dislodged.

In general most bleeding will resolve within the first 1-2 weeks though it is possible to have occasional bleeding up to 1 month or in some cases up to 2 after a TURP - depending on your activity level.

Please contact your Urologist. There is a medication that may help with the bleeding if it continues. I'm sure he'll want to see you - or at the very least be notified of your symptoms.

Take care - and call your doc. I wish you the best.
